Fabrice Santoro managed to sneak in his first round match on another rainy day at the Hall of Fame Championships.
With Mardy Fish out because of Davis Cup obligations, Fabrice Santoro is the top seed in Newport. The Frenchman is competing in his last year on the ATP tour, as he has announced his retirement at the end of the season.
Santoro was finally able to play his first round match on Thursday. There was enough of a break in the rain for the Frenchman to take out Flavio Cipolla of Italy in straight sets.
Cipolla had a host of chances to break Santoro’s serve. He earned a whopping 7 break points in the first set and 4 in the second – but he only managed to convert one of them. Unfortunately for the Italian, Santoro was more successful in that area.
Santoro broke just once, early in the opening set, but it was enough to secure a one set lead. The second set was more closely contested. The two men traded breaks of serve and only at 5-5 did the Frenchman secure the lead.
American Taylor Dent is up next for Santoro.
