Juan Martin Del Potro, the highest-ranked player in Davis Cup action this weekend, will meet Ivo Minar on Friday as Argentina visits the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Tommy Robredo battle in the Germany-Spain tie.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Ivo Minar
Del Potro and Minar will be squaring off for the first time when they contest Friday's second singles rubber in the Argentina vs. Czech Republic Davis Cup quarterfinal tie. Minar has home-court advantage, but Del Potro is still the clear favorite. The 20-year-old Argentine is a solid No. 5 in the world after a breakout 2008 campaign followed by an equally impressive 2009 season. Del Potro reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the French Open, but was dealt a tough draw at Wimbledon and fell to Lleyton Hewitt in the second round.
Minar is up to a career-high 64th in the world rankings, but he owns a mere 4-8 match record at the ATP level this year. All he really has going for him is what should be a boisterous Czech crowd. That alone could be enough to make the underdog competitive, but Del Potro simply has too much game for him. Del Potro in no more than four sets is the sensible pick.
Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. Tommy Robredo
It will be the fifth career meeting between Kohlschreiber and Robredo when the two players do battle in the second singles rubber of the Germany vs. Spain quarterfinal tie. Not only does Robredo own a perfect 4-0 head-to-head record over Kohlschreiber, but he and the Spaniards also have home-court advantage this weekend. They have decided to host the tie on clay, a surface on which three of Robredo's four victories over Kohlschreiber have come.
Robredo has also been in solid form this season. He is an impressive 34-13 for his 2009 campaign and has already won two clay-court titles. Kohlschreiber is a stellar 26-13, a record that includes an upset of Novak Djokovic in the third round of the French Open. In his next match at Roland Garros, however, the German went down to Robredo. Kohlschreiber has the talent to pull off an upset here, but it's hard to imagine him doing it in front of Spanish fans if he could not do it at a neutral setting in Paris. Look for Robredo to prevail once again in four.
