  • Murray in the money after Wimbledon

    7/9/09 10:39 AM | Johan Lindahl
Murray in the money after Wimbledon Andy Murray is set to out-earn footallber David Beckham as Britain's highest-paid sportsman after his Wimbledon semi-final success and the promise of more to come next month at the US Open.

The 22-year-old Scot has cleaned up his off-court act in recent months, cutting his unruly hair, losing some of his gruff demeanour and charming a nation with his run at Wimbledon.

Marketing experts say he could be on track to exceed the $200 million fortune earned by Beckham and former Spice Girl wife Victoria. Murray is managed by the same company, 19 Entertainment, which handles the Beckhams.

Reports indicate that the No. 3 is also the target of the top clothing firms, who look set to make offers which will dwarf the $1.2 million he gets from Britain's Fred Perry line.

Even his "autobiography," ghost-written at age 20, is now the subject of paperback bidding rights, even though Murray himself long ago admitted that it was a slightly presumptuous move on his part.
The re-release of Hitting Back could be worth a quick $800,000, to top up his $1.6 million from a mineral water company.

Murray earned some good publicity earlier this year in the depth of the world financial crisis when he offered to reduce the rate on his $3.6-million Royal Bank of Scotland contract, a move which was rejected by Britain's current corporate villain, now temporarily benefitting from the post-Wimbledon "Murray effect".

Makes you wonder what he'll get if he ever wins Wimbledon ...

Hahaha... The UK is so desperate to find a sporting superstar. If they are like Spain or France who have a lot of superstars, Muzza wont get that much...

Seriously ..........................this is pathetic you gotta be kidding me!

Haha, tennislover, that really made me laugh out loud, so true. I was thinking about the amount they make in endorsements the other day, but this gives me a better idea. Poor guy though, if he doesn't win a slam soon he is gonna realize they don't like him as much as they seem too.

He's about to announce BIG new deal with adidas.

No way Andy will bcome Safina of men's tour- so there!

deuce , 7/10/09 8:38 AM

I have no doubt about that deuce! Andy is an intelligent player, a fit player and a motivated player! Those slams will start coming in along with lots of other titles too. He has been maturing in front of our eyes in the past year and he is a pleasure to watch!

fan4t: thanx for your kind words, just hope he can play a bit more aggressively in future. BTW have you seen tryxxyfest is back? OMG there's gonna be blood on the sand and you, my tennis friend, will be out of the firing line!

Safina is better than Murray in GS rite now. But Andy can change that with a win in USO which he is at his best.

torres9 , 7/10/09 9:13 PM

torres9: am hopeful but Andy M has gotta "destroy not toy" if he is to win a GS. Did you see Safina is almost 2,000 points ahead of nearest rival? It's much much closer in the men's right at the top and at 5 and 6 Andy R only about 400 behind Delpotro. Interesting.

LOL... funny how serena won Wimby,AO and USO but still lags 200o points.
