After a rainy Tuesday suspended play, the field got back to work on Wednesday. Nicolas Mahut and Philipp Petzschner advanced.
Nicolas Mahut def. Amer Delic 6-4, 6-4
France’s Nicolas Mahut is better known as a doubles player – his best singles performances come during the 4 weeks of grass court tournaments. He was forced to qualify for the Queen’s Club tournament; he eventually made it to the third round where he lost to Ivo Karlovic. Mahut was in good form on Wednesday against American Amer Delic. He never faced a single break point on his way to the straight set win. Mahut will face American Alex Bogomolov, Jr. in the second round.
Philipp Petzschner def. Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2
Germany’s Philipp Petzschner had a tricky match against the 134 ranked Horacio Zeballos of Argentina. The German pocketed the opening set easily enough. Petzschner saved the three break points against him, and was able to convert one of the two he had against Zeballos. The second set was a struggle for the German. The two men traded breaks of serve as each man struggled with his first serve percentage (both were in the 50s). Zeballos was able to level the match in the tiebreaker. Petzschner was able to wrest control back in the third set. He won the match with a double service break.
