Croatia are desperate to avoid the label of favourite in this weekend's Davis Cup tie against the US with injured Andy Roddick missing.
"Roddick has been a Davis Cup stalwart for many, many years, so we'll miss him", admitted US skipper Patrick McEnroe. "We're certainly very happy and confident with the team, that we have a good chance to get a win".
America's losing Wimbledon finalist withdrew from the World Group quarter-final starting Friday at the Zatika sport arena in this costal resort village after hurting a hip in his five-set loss to Roger Federer. Roddick has now missed two ties with Croatia after skipping a meeting in 2003 in Zagreb.
The shakeup has spooked Croatian captain Goran Prpic: "This is bad for us. Now everyone will think that we are favourites now and we are not. Both the Americans and us can win all the ties".
Roddick was replaced by Mardy Fish, who withdrew as top seed this week at a grass ATP event in Newport. "Instead of drained Roddick, we will be facing a motivated Fish who will want to prove that he deserves a place in team", said Prpic.
Croatia hold a a 2-0 record over the US, the last defeat coming in a sweep led by Ivan Ljubicic in Los Angeles four years ago. The hosts will field Marin Cilic, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Ivo Karlovic, Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko.
The US will start James Blake and the Bryan brothers against the only team against whom they hold a losing record.
