Russia and Israel will battle for a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals this weekend in Tel Aviv. Their tie will begin with Igor Andreev vs. Harel Levy.
Israel owns home-court advantage in its Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against Russia, and the host nation will assume a real edge if it can win the opening rubber without its team leader on the court.
Dudi Sela, who made it to the Wimbledon fourth round and is up to a career-high 33rd in the world, will watch the first singles match as Harel Levy has been drawn to kick off the proceedings for Israel. Levy will be going up against Igor Andreev for the very first time.
Despite being the visitor, Andreev is obviously a massive favorite in this one. Levy, at 30 years old, is toiling at No. 210 in the rankings. He has played in just one main draw of an ATP event this year and lost in the Halle first round. Levy did, however, contest two Davis Cup thrillers in Israel's first-round win over Sweden. He fell to Thomas Johansson 8-6 in the fifth before outlasting Andreas Vinciguerra 8-6 in the fifth two days later.
While Levy is relegated to the Challenger circuit, Andreev, of course, spends all of his time at the ATP level. The Russian is just 18-18 in matches this season, but he is coming off a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon. Andreev also reached the the third round of the French Open.
Levy's big-match experience in Davis Cup will no doubt help him as he faces this daunting task in Andreev. It should allow him to be competitive, but Andreev's superiority in talent could simply be too much to overcome. Look for the Russian to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after four sets.
