  • Ginepri advances in Newport

    7/7/09 4:39 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ginepri advances in Newport American Robby Ginepri will join countrymen Taylor Dent and Jesse Levine in the second round in Newport, Rhode Island.

Struggling American Robby Ginepri needed three sets to dispatch of Santiago Ventura on opening day of the 2009 Campbells Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. On the heels of a disappointing season, Ginepri has seen his ranking drop from 49 in the world in January of this year to 105 in the world. The American was bludgeoned in the first round of Wimbledon two weeks ago by Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 1-6, 1-6.

Santiago Ventura of Spain is almost exclusively a clay courter. The Spaniard most recently played in a clay court event on the Challenger circuit, where he was ousted in the quarterfinals.

Ginepri was dominant in the opening set of play. He was able to gain a two-break advantage to take the opening set 6-2. He struck 2 aces in the process. Just when he appeared to be in complete control of the match, the American had a lapse in concentration.

Despite his lack of grass court credentials, Ventura was able to break Ginepri three times in the second set to level the match. The American pulled himself together enough in the end to break Ventura once in the third set for the match win.

Ginepri will take on countryman Brendan Evans in the second round.
