Taylor Dent and Jesse Levine have seen their way to the second round in Newport with wins on Monday.
Taylor Dent def. Marcos Daniel
Wildcard Taylor Dent only struck 8 aces in his first round match against Brazil’s Marcos Daniel. The number is quite low for a player like Dent especially on grass. But as it turned out, 8 was plenty against a sagging Daniel. The American only served at 51%, but he won all but one (21 of 22) of his first serve points. Daniel looked every bit the clay courter as he chased Dent’s shots for the 49 minutes of the match.
Jesse Levine def. Chris Guccione
In a much more competitive match, Jesse Levine downed the big-serving Aussie Chris Guccione in 2 tiebreakers. The two men traded breaks of serve in both sets, but it was Levine who was the steadier in the tiebreaks, each of which he won 7-2. The match was so closely played that the American won 92 points in the match to Guccione’s 91. Levine will play the winner of Philipp Petzschner and Horacio Zeballos in the second round.
