  • Injured Roddick pulls from Davis Cup date in Croatia

    7/6/09 10:01 PM | Johan Lindahl
Injured Roddick pulls from Davis Cup date in Croatia Fori the first time in 18 ties there will be no Andy Roddick leading a US Davis Cup team as the injured three-time Wimbledon finalist withdrew with a hip injury from the weekend match-up with Croatia.

Roddick's place will be taken by No. 23 Mardy Fish a day after Roddick lost his third Wimbledon final to Roger Federer.

Croatia will field Marin Cilic, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Ivo Karlovic, Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko on the indoor clay at Porce against Fish, James Blake and the Bryan brothers.

The Americans are bidding to defeat Croatia for the first time, having lost to them in the first round in 2003 and 2005.

"Andy had a great run at Wimbledon. He battled for more than four hours yesterday and fought hard to reach the final", said US captain Patrick McEnroe. "Understandably, his body is not up for the rigors of Davis Cup in such a short turnaround".

"Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years and his dedication to Davis Cup and his team mates is unquestioned. Mardy has been playing well and we're glad to have him back in the singles line-up".

...WHY!? Well I understand but still, this is a downer. Ivo is too good right now, this worries me a lot. I was hoping we would win. Well I hope Andy feels better soon. Most of the top players other the DelPo aren't doing anything until Rogers Masters anyway.

Ando played for me the most memorable match i ever did see in all my tennis history at the final, 'wimbledon 09'. Had he won the second set would have perhaps painted a different altogether picture. Finally we hear the doves cry, that all good things indeed must come to a somewhat beautiful ending....

Hope he'll be ok for US Open Series. In the meantime, it's time for JB to step up and show us what he's made of. The Bryans will do their part, and Mardy's playing great right now (I hope he can return Dr Ivo's serve!). I am optimistic, both for Andy and the USA.

Blake is due to play well, but he doesn't like pressure or expectations, so I think it's up to Fish to get it done. This will be extremely tough for the stars and stripes.
