Roger Federer defeats Tommy Haas in straight sets on Friday afternoon at the All-England Club. Federer is through to his seventh straight Wimbledon final.
Roger Federer is one win away from the all-time Grand Slam men's singles record.
Federer, who is tied with Pete Sampras at 14 slam titles, dispatched Tommy Haas 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-3 on Friday afternoon in the Wimbledon semifinals. The world No. 2 needed just two hours and two minutes to book a spot in his seventh consecutive Wimbledon title match.
Having taken Federer to five sets at last month's French Open, Haas showed early signs of making this one equally competitive. Haas struggled to win any points at all against Federer's serve, but neither man earned a single break point throughout the first set. As he often is, however, Federer was too tough in the tiebreaker and took it seven points to three.
One break of serve was enough for Federer in each of the next two sets. The Swiss struck with his opponent serving at 5-6 in the second, and it was routine the rest of the way after he had two-set advantage in hand.
Federer broke midway through the third and closed out the proceedings with one final service hold at 5-3. The five-time Wimbledon champion served at 75 percent on the afternoon while firing 11 aces and only one double-fault. He won almost 90 percent of his first-serve points and even won an incredible 81 percent when forced to toss in a second delivery.
Either Andy Murray or Andy Roddick will face Federer in Sunday's Wimbledon final. Federer has lost four in-a-row to Murray and is 2-6 against the Scot overall. At the other end of the spectrum, Federer is a well-documented 18-2 against Roddick--including 3-0 at the All-England Club (2-0 in Wimbledon finals).

Hi Malt1, I have had to be off-line since the day before Rafa pulled until a couple of days back - what a time for it, to have missed lots of action at the year's high point.
But still, we live to fight another day! The Times says that My Guy is pencilling in Montreal for his return, so we'll see.
Bleacher Report, as mentioned by Zoey, is potentially addictive - and a useful reminder that sports can be very localised. [Just look at all those baseball and NFL threads which mean nothing, or should I perhaps say zilch, round these parts.]
I can of course sense your excitement about events and to be scrupulously fair I don't blame you - but that reference to Roger Federer having played "101 matches" in Wimbledon semis gave me a good giggle! [Maybe we ought to saw him in half and count the rings...?]
Might this be a reference to the number of service games that he has played in his, ahem, seven semi-final appearances a SW19? I'm not fully sure and no doubt you will confirm things in due course.
If it is service games, then that is simply incredible. I mean, Serena Wiliams has lost two semi-final matches out of fifteen and that is impressive enough. But two service games out of 101? I can't think of any service stat that compares to that, and I go back almost 101 Wimbledon semis myself!

fedexfan , 7/4/09 7:04 AM
morning guys....
gorafago! there you are! we missed you! yeah....the 101 service matches.....johnny mac on bbc mentioned this and i noted it down....so i think he must have meant service games and hence only having lost 2...but it will be on the fed statistic site somewhere....and you are right...just incredible.....there isn't much more that can be said about this guy...but he just keeps going beyond brilliance!
I love roddick and will be looking forward to sunday....he brought tears to my eyes yesterday when he was down on his haunches and looked shocked that he had won when he got up.....holding back the emotion...tennis...such an emotional sport.....it's just such a great feeling to watch tennis and when wimby ends and having to wait another year......awwwwww..it's having to be patient.....until then....
obviously hard court season starts but the grass courts...so special.....
but great news for the final.....great news for fed and for andy...to go through.....
but obviously rooting for fed....and now he has reached the final..he holds on to his no.2 spot at the very least...which is great news...i just want him to go for the kill...have his game plan ready and much as i love andy rod.....fed still gotta be focused and visualise that ball.....coming back at him! Arod is a different, more revitalised player and it shows what you can achieve with that belief.....
what have you heard about rafa then gorafago...haven't really been following his recovery and not much been posted about him on a couple of his threads.....but am sure you will be out there in full force when he's back in montreal.....
as for now...looking forward to sunday....and looking forward to fed moving through the final game by game...should be a great match.....am sure he can keep it together..but both Arod and fed are seasoned champions at this stage of a slam.....so rooting for fed all the way!
looking forward to you being around gorafago! don't go away again!
C'MON!
Allez Federer!

Fed is just sensational!!! What I notice different from last year is Fed is a lil bit buff this year. Last year, he was skinny becoz of mono and thus he lost a lil bit of power.
Malty, did you catch Fed's velvet backhand volley that defies law of angles in the third set.
Haas did what Tsonga did to Fed last year by waving his arms at one point which shows Haas frustration on losing to Fed again and again.
Sometimes I pity the players that is the same batch as Fed. What I like about Fed is his ability to hold the shot and waits where the opponent goes before executing a shot.
FED IS JUST THE BEST!!!!

This a treat for all fed fans!!! An article listing opinions from the people in tennis.
FED IS SIMPLY THE BEST!!!
torres9 , 7/4/09 1:27 PM
torres..yeah...i know exactly what you mean..that slight gap/hiatus for about a second...he seems suspended in mid air with the shot..waiting for his opponent to decide which way to go...'
Johnny mac commented on it yesterday torres...he said that it is a really difficult and talented thing to do...to wait for that millisecond and then decide...he said it isn't easy and he cannot think of any other player in his experience that has done that....what does that say torres? that fed is a 'magician'....
i don't know how anyone can say that this hasn't been a great wimby! It's been a b-r-i-l-l-i-a-n-t WIMBY....some great matches...some really fabulous play from all the players in this tourny....simply spectacular!
thanks for the link torres...will go check it out now....
C'MON!
Allez Federer!
malteser1 , 7/4/09 3:56 PM
I was watching Andy matches and was astonished by his facing backwards+ full-stretched defensive+no look shot but Fed did it yesterday LOL as if to show to the fans anything Andy can do, he can do it better.
FED IS SURELY THE BEST!!!
torres9 , 7/4/09 5:16 PM
torres..there is simply no question...when he equalled sampras's record and won FO....i was sooo elated for him...as am sure every single fedfan was too......
anything from now on for fed...to me....is a HUGE BONUS....no pressure...monkey off his back.....but i would like to see him win 20 GS..even 21....in fact...why not the nex 16 slams up until 2012 olympics...why not?!
simply awesome......stupid phrases from carrie Mr. smugalot? i guess she just jealous...along with her stooges....
C'MON!
Allez Federer!

Federer takes on Roddick, history in men's final at Wimbledon
By Howard Fendrich ? 10 minutes ago
LONDON ? A year ago, plenty of people were feeling sorry for Roger Federer.
They were sending him letters with good wishes or - believe it or not - with tennis tips. They were offering advice about how to deal with a perceived drop in performance and ideas for how to beat Rafael Nadal.
"People say, 'Oh, you're in decline,' very quickly," Federer said Saturday. "I hope this opens some eyes, these last few months."
Yes, look at Federer now.
When he steps onto Centre Court to face No. 6-seeded Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon final Sunday, Federer will be trying to collect his 15th Grand Slam singles championship, breaking a tie with Pete Sampras for the most in history.
Also at stake for Federer:
-a sixth Wimbledon title;
-a chance to become only the third man in 40 years to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season;
-a return to No. 1 in the rankings, a spot he ceded to Nadal 1 1/2 months after losing to the Spaniard in last year's epic final at the All England Club.
"Obviously, you can't really say enough to kind of signify what Roger's career has been to this point," said Roddick, who is hoping to win his second major championship.
Asked about Federer's bid for No. 15, the American replied: "I'd love to delay it for another Grand Slam."
Roddick won the 2003 U.S. Open, but he is one of the many unfortunate souls who chose to play tennis for a living and happened to have been born around the same time as Federer: Roddick will turn 27 in August, a few weeks after Federer turns 28.
Roddick is 2-18 against Federer over their careers. That includes 0-7 at Grand Slam tournaments, 0-3 at Wimbledon, with losses to Federer in the 2003 semifinals and 2004 and '05 finals at the All England Club. Roddick also lost to Federer in the 2006 U.S. Open title match.
"He has a lot of energy. He's very funny, very nice. As a player he's known for his incredible serve and intensity and fighting spirit. He never gives up. It hasn't been easy for him the last few years. Americans have a lot of expectations. They were spoiled with Sampras and Agassi and all those before that. For them, it's not good enough to have someone in the top 10; they want somebody who is No. 1," Federer said. "It's great to see him back in a final."
Imagine how Roddick feels about it.
"You don't go back to a Wimbledon final by accident," he said. "It certainly is a process. And it's probably been a longer process than I would have liked."
Roddick hit 43 aces in his quarter-final victory over top returner Lleyton Hewitt, and then beat No. 3 Andy Murray in the semifinals.
"I've always said that serve makes him so dangerous, no matter what surface you play him on," Federer said. "He not only has a great first serve, but he probably has the best second serve in the game."
The man Federer beat easily in the semifinals, Tommy Haas, was far less charitable.
"Andy Roddick is playing some of his best tennis that I've seen. Playing extremely well. Serving well," Haas said. "But I wouldn't give him really a chance to beat Roger in the final. Maybe take a set. That's my opinion."
To be fair, though, this is a rebuilt Roddick.
After a second-round exit at Wimbledon in 2008, he sat down with then-girlfriend Brooklyn Decker - they were married this April - to discuss his future in tennis.
"Last year after I played here, I mean, that was a hard, hard couple of weeks. You know, Brook and I had a lot of talks on ... if I still thought I could play and at least be towards the top of the game. I definitely openly questioned it at that point," Roddick said. "So this off-season, we said, 'You know what? If you're not going to be up there, let's at least not wonder. Let's prepare yourself and give yourself every opportunity.' I did work real hard and was committed, and have been committed, from everything to diet to sleep."
He dropped about 15 pounds. He hired a new coach, Larry Stefanki. He focused on the parts of his game that needed improvement, from his backhand to his volleys to his return of serve.
All of those elements have been on display this fortnight.
"When you lose in the second round in an event you feel like you can win, it really irritates you. It gets under your skin, and you don't forget that. He's prepared very diligently from Dec. 1 on," Stefanki said. "He's very motivated. There's a lot of good things that can happen if he stays relaxed, because he's done all the hard work now. Now he's just got to trust himself and play ball."
C'MON!

Ya'll federities! mwah!
Nat'l Independece Day . Big, big celebrations goin on with fireworks, music, dancing...traditional yeehaa kind of day.
NBC showed entire Murray match and last two sets of Federer's. I recorded and watched RF over 2x in extreme awe. Haas played great tennis but Rog played great too then simply kicked into a higher level at key moments. The shot torres mentions is one, also his serve, a magnificent lob, forehand backhand and finish the match off with that vertical leap smash....coooool sweet swiss
And yeah, he is healthy, conditioned, ready to go the distance. Maybe even eager to go distance? He's CHILL, just as he says. We, his fans might not be quite as chill but Brad Gilbert made the comment that Rog, dear, sweet man, was vacuuming the "flat", or the house, wherever they are staying! Vacuuming on Thursday before the semi final!! TOO CUTE! Can't you see him? I believe it. He's just a regular neat freak IMMORTAL! lol...
And how many superstars take to vacuuming? The whole time I am watching that glorious match also imagining him with a bagless vac tidying up....lmao
who can say he won't make a great daddy.

Malt! don't get a heat stroke... you said it is hot and humid there! wish we were watching this final together, chick! Something tells me my heart is gonna be all Swiss Miss tomorrow. Can't help loving RF tennis and that is really what it comes down to: style of tennis.
Back in 2003, malt, soo proud of my homeboy but in 2004 had fallen in mesmerized state with Federer tennis style. By then, there was kinda no contest. I was jumping, dancing, screaming for Roger Federer, love.
Andy R is a new man these days and his tennis has taken on some new tricks. I mean absolutely no disrespect to Arod but his serve still reminds me, as the sweat drips off the cap, of that wringing wet gym towel being snapped at me....as much as I love him off court, it's kinda like same as Rafa. For me, imo, it's Federer's chill and that grace combined with power that captures me.
See, told ya I'd regroup. Still, its a win win tomorrow, tho I know who to cheer.
mwah malt!...gotta go eat the obligatory hot dog or two
where we right the wrongs....7/5/2009
C'mon Feddy..... WE LOVE YOU ROG....
zoey234 , 7/4/09 7:14 PM
Ahhh zoey......thought of you today...independence day...independent woman.....independence and freedom...that must be what fed is feeling.....freedom....freedom from the chains....freedom from the pressure and stress.....we all know that he can win tomorrow.....we know it...we feel it...he feels it...as I think torres said...at this stage of any slam...he smells the blood and goes in for the kill......(I liked that analogy....)...an animal who is hungry....yum yum....
go fed go!
Wimby has been fantastic so far...despite what fanny said...the woman truly does not know her tennis...such a bad spirit on these threads......
But regrouping now and will be with you in spirit...am looking at coming to watch the US Open in August so may be see you there?
For now...all energy and focus is on wimby and roger!go:go:go!
C'MON!
Allez Federer!

By Kevin Fylan
LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) -
Even if Roger Federer gets his record 15th grand slam title at Wimbledon on Sunday retirement will not be an option -- for the simple reason that his heavily pregnant wife has ruled it out.
"Mirka's dream was always that our child can see me play as well," the 27-year-old Federer said on the eve of the final against Andy Roddick. "So there you go. I have to play a few more years just because of Mirka.
"And, anyway, the 2012 Olympics here at Wimbledon is something I'm going to be a part of.
"Awaiting our first child, it's quite something on a personal note. Also I'm playing wonderful tennis at the moment. Everything seems just great. I'm not really worried about my motivation in any way, because I love this game too much."
Federer shares the record of 14 majors with the American Pete Sampras, who won the last of his seven Wimbledons in 2000.
If going out on his own at the top of the list was not motivation enough, victory would also see Federer reclaim the number one ranking he lost to Rafael Nadal after the Spaniard beat him in last year's French Open and Wimbledon finals.
"It's nice to hang on to the top ranking, going through life being the best, being called the best by everybody," he said ahead of his seventh successive Wimbledon final.
"You're not just really a champion, you're the best at something. That's a nice feeling to have. That's why I hope I can become number one in the world again, hopefully from Monday on again. I have to play well on Sunday and focus on Roddick."
SMOOTH RUNNING
Federer's progress through to the final has been serene, with the Swiss dropping just one set in six matches.
The 26-year-old Roddick, who won his one major title at the U.S. Open in 2003, has had to scrap a lot harder, particularly in seeing off Lleyton Hewitt in a five-set quarter-final before beating home favourite Andy Murray in four in Friday's semi.
Federer has won all but two of the 20 matches he has played against Roddick but the unquenchable spirit shown by the American during these championships, to go with a serve that can be unreadable, should mean he has options on Sunday.
"No matter what surface you play him on, no matter where you play him and how bad the record is for him, he'll always have that shot just because he can serve so great," Federer said. "He probably has the best second serve in the game as well."
