Q. How do you prepare to play against someone against Ivo Karlovic?

ROGER FEDERER: Same as I do against other players. I like those sort of challenges, you know. I mean, it's maybe not the most fun match to go through. But I like to beat this guy, you know, because he makes it hard on us, you know, to beat him. He's become an excellent player. Not only just his serve, he's got to have something more otherwise he wouldn't be ranked where he is and he wouldn't be beating all those good players.

He's not to be underestimated. I've played him on all surfaces in my career: indoors, outdoors, grass, clay. I've even played him here, so I would like to play him.


Q. But in practice sessions...

ROGER FEDERER: I don't practice with him. No, nothing.


Q. I know, but when you practice, do you practice returning this serve?

ROGER FEDERER: No. That's why it takes a little bit get used to in the beginning. I've also played him eight times. Nothing new for me.


Q. Despite last year's final, do you still regard this court like home cooking? It's like coming home to this court?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I think having been here so many years now, having had so much success, yeah, definitely feel like there's a sense of coming home here. The finals of last year doesn't change a thing actually.


Q. The first time you were on the Centre Court, was there a feeling of awe or fright? Rod Laver said he just wanted to leave as soon as he could; he was overwhelmed.

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, I had an especially interesting first Centre Court appearance with playing Pete obviously. That adds to the whole drama. I mean, normally you only make it on Centre if you're very good yourself or if you play a top player yourself.

So from that standpoint it's always very interesting, always your first Centre Court appearance. Obviously playing Pete, going for his fifth Wimbledon, quite ironic now looking back at it. Cold hands. Pulse was racing. Disbelief, you know, that I was actually playing my hero, but also being for the first time on Centre Court. So my head was spinning.

But took me a couple of games and I was in it. It's interesting how the mind then, you know, goes into focus; whereas before there's so many questions, so many things flying around all around Centre Court.


Q. I think tennis fans would find it interesting that you have sort of all the scouting reports in your brain ready to go. Is there an example of where you really have had to change a scouting report and approach against a major player?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I always talk about my matches with Severin, for instance. I would like to play the way probably the opponent would play, what his strengths, what his weaknesses are, what's been working in my game so far this tournament, and whatnot, you know, how to avoid playing bad.

You know, you just put everything on the table and you talk about how you would like to approach the match. And I've done it many times. There's times where, you know, when I didn't have a coach, didn't have a manager, you just walk out on court. I spoke to Mirka a little bit, because she knows also a little bit about tennis. Today I don't talk to her about it anymore, I talk to Severin. So it works really well.


Q. Does an example come to mind where you changed your strategy or approach with a particular player?

ROGER FEDERER: The more you play a player, the more you know him. It actually helps and makes it easier normally. Of course if you don't have a very good record you try to look into that particular player maybe a little bit more, but there's only so much you can analyze. Afterwards you got to kind of perform, you know.


Q. How have you been killing time away from the court? Do you stay around Wimbledon? Do you get to go into London itself?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, try to go to London sometimes, you know. Not very much just because Mirka needs to rest. So we like hanging around at Wimbledon. It's quite relaxing, especially the whole clay court season is tough. The traveling. It's nice to get one of those weeks where you just stay put.


Q. Verdasco might be your next round opponent. That match is going on now with Karlovic. What is your scouting report on him and the different type of challenge he would be for you?

ROGER FEDERER: I played him in Indian Wells this year. I thought it was a tough match. Had it under control. He came back. Was supposed to win the second set. I think he served for the set there.

But he's a great player. He's really improved I think the last nine months since he won Davis Cup and played so well in Australia. He's always been dangerous, you know. He's always had that. But just now he seems more stable in his game and his mind and everything. This is obviously a big test for him right now.

Guess you aren't a fan of tennis either since tennis involves many others besides him. Tennis also existed before fed too. malteser1, just wanted to let you know that both Stan and Murray got praise from the American commentators. They were impartial with their views and comments. Stan was amazing tonight, it's a shame he couldn't get the win after such a display. Murray hung in there and had the home crowd advantage.

One of the things the American commentators said of Stan is that they can't believe a player so talented has only won one singles title in his career. They were marveling at Stan's forehand and backhand ground strokes, which were awesome!

There were plenty of comments by you fedex about Rafa that weren't "respectful" especially concerning his injury and during the period where you emphatically stated that you "hate Rafa." And many of those comments were on a Rafa thread!

Keep remembering Roger is genius and he, of all players will be patient in the ace serving match. He will just wait until tie break if he must and win it game by game there. Check out the Soderling match. Their match in the last 2 sets was on serve for the most part and Fed simply went to tie break and out played him. It will be very difficult for Ivo to break Fed and vice versa.

The "fed nonsense" words were a response to zoey's continuing complaints (along with molty's) about all the Murray coverage, how unfair it is, and all that waaa waaa waaaa! She claims that is the reason she now totally dislikes Murray. Well, welcome to reality! Rafa fans have had to deal with all that too but with fed coverage and commentator bias. Point was that now zoey is experiencing why many Rafa fans do not like fed! We've dealt with it for years..... she hasn't! Saying all that about Murray certainly isn't on the "positive" side of words!

This is a thread about fed. This is NOT a lovefest, cheering section that ONLY fed fans that agree with malty and her puppets can post on. Opinions are up for debate and not all are favorable to fed. DEAL WITH IT!!!!! If you want a totally positive for fed cheering section, then like cable suggested, go to RF.com and spread your love there. Now that information has been given, I understand the content/context in which the term was written. It has allowed me the opportunity put your statement in proper perspective. For the most part I choose to ignore what I don't like, to focus primarily on what I like. It is my way of enjoying what I do here. To each his own. I understand that we live in a world of polarity (both negative and positive). If it were otherwise I would not be here. And malteser, as for the facts, I knew all that, and I knew this: Number of times played on grass -- once, in 2004. Number of times Federer broke serve on grass, once in three sets (it was enough). So comparing what happened in Rome this year to what could happen on the much faster grass is like comparing summer to winter. As I said in my post, it was just a hunch, and it proved incorrect. Why? Obviously, Federer is a better player than Tsonga, and just as obviously, Karlovic wasn't nearly as overpowering today as he was that day last week when he probably would've beaten any one (46 aces, 82 winners and only 20 errors).

Perhaps we ARE about to see a renaissance given that Federer has the weight of the French off his shoulders. Or, maybe Federer has just reached the point in his career where all he really cares about are the majors. (I'd love to see him saddle up and play a full Davis Cup slate.)

Now, as for Federer, I have to say he's shown me something. When he lost to Nadal in Melbourne, I thought he was done. His reaction in defeat showed me that he knew, KNEW he was never going to beat Nadal again and that Rafa was gonna roll past all of his marks. And he pretty much played like that all spring--that besides Nadal (and Murray) anyone at any time was a threat.

But Madrid was a huge steppingstone, and Paris -- even though he didn't have to go through Nadal to win -- obviously even bigger. I think if he finishes Wimby with the title and the No. 1 ranking, he'll be back on top to stay for a while.

fan4tennis, I truly do symphatise with your circumstances and I gather you come on tennistalk to relax, talk tennis, and not to relive unhappy memories.

And malteser, you're a huge Fed fan, everyone knows that...but at the same time people are entitled to their own opinions about making comments regarding Roger and so on. I love Roger and his game and think he is a fantastic player but I'm not about to have a go at someone who claims he wasn't "THE BEST" because "BEST" is so subjective isn't it? I have to admit much as your posts are entertaining, you do get overly defensive sometimes and that is really not necessary nor needed.

Don't resort to personal attacks, girls. I believe both of you are above that, honestly.

I talked of my daughter in a very short post in response to your 3 days worth of whining and trash-mouthing me as to where I was since I had not congratulated Roger in the FO. (As if you're the official "congrat taker"). You spent long posts vilifying me for my lack of posts and a bunch of hateful psychobabble (which in essence was just you trying to rub it in my face) and I finally responded to say that some people actually have other lives and my daughter is more important than whether you feel fed got enough congrats from people on this site.

It was great to see Federer win another serve fest , clear use of strategy with low dipping bills and once a rally started it was clear federer was unbeatable. Some of the returns on Karlovic serve were winners with unbelievable reaction times.

Looking forward to another clash with Haas this is going to be an all out game with all departments tested.
