  • Kuala Lumpur back on ATP circuit in calendar clash with Bangkok

    6/26/09 3:48 PM | Johan Lindahl
Kuala Lumpur back on ATP circuit in calendar clash with Bangkok Kuala Lumpur has returned to the ATP Asian calendar, with French Open finalist Robin Söderling announcing his participation in inadvertently dramatic fashion.

The Swede made a confirming telephone call or organisers which rang just as Malaysia's prime minister was speaking at the presentation ceremony in the capital.

The city is back on the circuit after a gap or more than a decade. In 1995 Chile's Marcelo Rios won the indoor event.

The tournament from September 28 also boasts No. 8 and Australian Open semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco and Chile's No. 10 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile. It will be held the same week as the Thailand Open with Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, one hour's flight away in Bangkok.

Also playing: Nikolay Davydenko, Spain's David Ferrer and Japanese number one Kei Nishikori, currently out with an elbow injury.

The Malaysian Open will be held at the 16,000-seat Putra Stadium in the capital. It is the fifth of the autumn Asian swing and will double-up with the Thailand Open, held the same week. Events in Tokyo and Beijing and the Shanghai Masters 1000 follow.

"There is great demand for cities to host ATP events and in particular within the Asian region," said ATP International head Brad Drewett. "Asian tennis fans have demonstrated that they are among the best in the world and we are excited that tennis fans across Malaysia now have the opportunity to see some of the world's best players battling it out in the heart of Kuala Lumpur".
