Fernando Verdasco defeats Kristof Vliegen in four sets on Wednesday afternoon to reach the Wimbledon third round. He is joined there by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ivo Karlovic.
(7) Fernando Verdasco d. Kristof Vliegen 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-4
Verdasco just barely scraped past Vliegen in a four-setter that lasted two hours and 55 minutes, setting up a third-round encounter against Albert Montanes. Vliegen never broke serve and never even got a look at a single break point. In fact the only break of the entire afternoon came in the very last game of the match. After three straight tiebreakers, Verdasco finally broke with Vliegen serving to stay in it at 4-5 in the fourth. Verdasco double-faulted seven times, but otherwise played extremely solid tennis, especially on serve. The seventh-seeded Spaniard fired 20 aces, and struck 53 winners to just 24 unforced errors. Vliegen hit 12 aces against a mere one double-fault while serving at an impressive 72 percent, but his lone hiccup on serve proved costly.
(22) Ivo Karlovic d. Steve Darcis 7-5, 6-3, 6-4
Darcis scored an impressive first-round victory over Dancevic, but he was no match for another big server in Karlovic on Wednesday afternoon. Karlovic was never broken and never even faced a break point in the lightning fast one hour and 43 minute affair. The 6'10'' Croat blasted 24 aces and double-faulted just once while putting in 70 percent of his first deliveries. Karlovic also overpowered Darcis when he got a look at the Belgian's second serves, winning 58 percent of those points mostly thanks to aggressive chip-and-charging. Karlovic wrapped up the proceedings with 47 winners and only 15 unforced errors. Next up for the No. 22 seed is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
(9) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Simone Bolelli, walkover
Suffering from a bad back, Bolelli pulled out of his first-round doubles match in hopes of being ready to take on Tsonga. Two days after coming back from two sets down to defeat Daniel Koellerer, however, the Italian was unable to take the court. The free pass puts Tsonga into the Wimbledon third round for the second time in as many appearances at the All-England Club. He reached the fourth round in 2007 before falling to fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
