Lleyton Hewitt advances to the third round of the Wimbledon Championships early Thursday, following a spectacular straight-sets dismissal of Juan Martin Del Potro.
Lleyton Hewitt turned in a terrific second-round performance at the Championships early Thursday afternoon, scoring an upset win over fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro. The 28-year-old veteran Australian, a champion at the tournament in 2002, took out the 20-year-old Argentine in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 after two hours and 32 minutes of competition.
Del Potro looked flat during the match, unable to secure six of 6 break point opportunities at 2-2 in the opening set. Hewitt took full advantage of an erratic Argentine, who struck nine errors in the set, pocketing a critical break of serve. The Australian struck 6 aces to just 3 unforced errors, finishing the 6-3 set in 45 minutes.
The players held serve comfortably during the second set, neither able to break serve until 5-5. Hewitt earned a break to lead 6-5, courtesy of a double fault and an errant forehand from Del Potro. The Argentine had a chance to recover the break in the following game, but failed to do so after dumping a return of serve into the bottom of the net. Hewitt closed the second set at 7-5, crushing an overhead smash on set point.
Del Potro, visibly struggling with his movement, trailed by a break at 3-2 in the third set. Hewitt, yet to drop serve, reached 5-4 in position to close out the match. The Argentine snagged his first- and only- service break to level the third set at 5-5. Del Potro could not hold onto the momentum, however, shanking a costly backhand error on break point to fall behind 5-6. Hewitt held his ground to collect two match points at 6-5. The Australian hit a double fault on the first, but converted the second after the Argentine launched a return over the baseline.
Hewitt completed the afternoon with four breaks of serve, 29 winners and 14 aces.
With the win, the Australian snaps a 12-match losing streak against top 10 players. He moves on to face Philipp Petzschner in the third round. The German survived a marathon five-setter to defeat compatriot Mischa Zverev, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-0.

Wow, that was nice. I liked DelPo interview where he complemented Hewitt. This was a dream match for me. I like DelPo so I'm happy to see him owned by someone he respects, plus I admit I love Hewitt too.
