  • Gonzalez and Ferrero through, Safin goes down

    6/24/09 3:56 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gonzalez and Ferrero through, Safin goes down 2008 semifinalist Marat Safin went down in flames against American Jesse Levine in first round action on Tuesday. Joining Levine in the second round are Juan Carlos Ferrero and Fernando Gonzalez.

    Jesse Levine def. Marat Safin 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4

Marat Safin continued his dismal 2009 on Tuesday with a first round loss to 133 ranked Jesse Levine. Safin has already announced that this will be his last year on the tour – and it seems the Russian has mentally retired already. Safin played uninspired tennis throughout much of the match. He hit 28 unforced error to just 30 winners, a differential that will not get the job done on the quick Wimbledon surface. Levine will take on Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in the second round.

Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3

Spanish old-timer Juan Carlos Ferrero continued his late-career renaissance with a surprising straight set victory over Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny. Ferrero played solid tennis and came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first set. The Spaniard has had a number of good results coming into Wimbledon, including a semifinal appearance at Queen’s Club a little over a week ago. Youzhny was a little flat in this match, but Ferrero played well and fully earned his spot in the second round.

Fernando Gonzalez def. Teimuraz Gabashvili 7-5, 7-5, 6-3

For the first two sets, Russia’s Teimuraz Gabashvili kept up with Fernando Gonzalez. The Chilean was the heavy favorite going into the match, but Gabashvili was able to keep up for the most part. Gonzalez was only able to secure the first two sets with a break of serve only in the last moments of each set. The Russian’s level dropped in the third set. He hit 10 unforced errors to 8 winners; Gonzalez was able to take advantage to take the match in straight sets.
