  • Federer crushes Garcia-Lopez, into Wimbledon third round

    6/24/09 6:46 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer crushes Garcia-Lopez, into Wimbledon third round Roger Federer remains on a roll after defeating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets on Wednesday. Federer is safely through to the Wimbledon third round.

Roger Federer eased into the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday afternoon, dispatching Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. Federer needed less than an hour and half to set up a meeting with either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Ivo Minar.

Garcia-Lopez won a clay-court title one week before the French Open and was coming off a semifinal finish in Eastbourne, but Federer cooled him off in a hurry. The world No. 2 broke in the third game of both the first and second sets to seize quick advantages. He never faced a break point in set one and saved two in the second to take a two-set lead.

One break in the third was easily enough for Federer, who admitted afterward that was able to work on some shots late in the match with such a comfortable cushion. It didn't matter what Federer tried in this encounter; everything worked. The Swiss finished with 27 winners and just 10 unforced errors, including only one mistake in the final set.

Federer served at 64 percent, fired 11 aces while double-faulting twice, and won an amazing 45 of 48 first-serve points (94 percent).

"I didn't have to play my very best," Federer said in his post-match interview. "It was solid, which is what I needed."

Andy Murray's fans should lose no sleep over his form as he continues his quest for history at Wimbledon.

That encouraging message came from no less a judge than Roger Federer as Murray was due to take on Latvia's Ernests Gulbis in the second round on Centre Court today.

Federer admitted he watched some of Murray's first-round struggle against American Robert Kendrick in which the British number one looked lethargic and lost the second set on a tie-break before eventually winning in four.

Federer said: "It's always possible for a guy to lose a set, especially on grass. If he serves well, plays the big points well, a set goes by pretty quickly, you know.

"But he (Murray) came through, so everything's under control for you guys."

Fed on Murray ............. his set loss in First round ..........

fedfans....fed is on fire...it's so great to see him out there playing 'freely'...you can see it in his tennis....i don't care what anyone says...he does not have the chains of 'making history' around his shoulders anymore...he is there....relaxed and free......no pressure....enjoying his tennis.....

he is the the best...he is the greatest tennis player ever......won on all surfaces......20 grand slam semi finals consecutively...won the last 15 of the 16 grand slam finals....johnny mac reporting for bbc tv at the mo....(he makes me smile...bad boy become good boy!)....said...along with rudzseki...that this unlikely EVER to be repeated......what a guy! what a guy! he is f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c..........

how lucky we are to be watching the master in action......gliding and dancing around the court.......playing 'free' tennis once again.......

fedfans....i think you also have to remember that roger has been 'pushed' very hard at Roland Garros....he played the equivalent of 4 finals (he said) in his presser.......he has the practice in his legs....and it has taken him little time to change to a different surface.....the french open was only a couple of weeks ago.....he has been pushed.....haas.....del potro.......soderling......

HE IS READY!

i mean he is firing on all cylinders guys! did you see him yesterday! (Oh My God)...when fed is pushed he plays his B-E-S-T tennis.....he handles stress brilliantly....and he said yesterday that he isn't thinking of the final...he knows the early rounds are the dangerous ones....and i like the fact that he is being measured in his interviews...not being thrown off balance...staying focused and looking to the next match only....this is the way....this is the only way fedfans....PURE FOCUS!

so it is game by game..........match by match..............2 down.......5 to go!

Go:Fed:Go:

C'MON!
Allez Federer!

tomnjerry2 ,: tnx for that, just to get more of Roger's nice words u can read this:

from Wimbledon.org:
Injury-free Federer reveals his secret
Wednesday, 24 June 2009
Written by Drew Lilley

With Rafael Nadal only the second defending champion in the past 80 years to miss Wimbledon through injury, Roger Federer?s longevity at the summit of the game takes on fresh significance.

After his second round victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, a match that saw him use his trademark economic yet ruthlessly efficient style to drop only eight games, talk soon turned to his major rival?s absence, particularly in light of the Swiss making it to 20 Grand Slam semi-finals in a row ? by far and away a record.

?Injuries and defeats come to us all sooner or later,,? the second seed said earnestly.

When pressed for his opinion, Federer was the epitome of magnanimity. ?It?s a shame for the tournament, that?s the main thing,Did I expect it? Probably. All the greats have had to miss a Grand Slam or two at one stage in their careers.?

the rest of it is nice too, but too long to post, read it there.

zoey...your man is out...delpo...listened to it on the radio coming home...will watch the highlights tonight.....

fedfans......this has got me thinking/wondering....delpo said that Hewitt was his 'all time' role model as he was growing up..and that he was 'in awe' of him....i wonder when players say too many things to the press...hewitt would have analysed his game...would have known what delpo thinks of him...gone on to that court all guns ready and killed him on court with this 'awesomeness'........

i think perhaps delpo did not play his best and was too much in awe of hewitt...perhaps was a little bit too relaxed......being seeded no. 5.....and thinking perhaps that hewitt was 'over?'....i always think the earlier rounds are dangerous...everyone has to stay on their guard.........

our tennis channel over here...commentators said. delpo...only 20 (love him!)....will only get better over the next 2 or 3 years.....and so will take a lot away from this match...that they saw how good he was on the court...but that he has time...being the youngest player in the top ten.....

anyways....so we move on to the fed......i cannot imagine that after today (with delpo going out)...that fed will underestimate a-n-y....p-l-a-y-e-r out there...and when i saw his interview yesterday when he talked about only concentrating on the earlier rounds and getting through those games/matches first....before he starts thinking ahead..that there was no point ..............that he would do his best and look to come up with the goods......a solid strategy from federer...zoey.....solid...sweet....

so he will be analysing Kol's game today.....and will go on court tomorrow....knowing that he.....(fed)..... has the shots...just gotta focus on his game and make sure that he comes out all guns blazing...that way....all should be good for the fed....Kols is a great player....knocked out djoker in the French...has the game....but the fed is strong and we have to remember that..mentally he is tough and he wants to win! it just goes to show tho' that there is no room for having a 'bad day at the office'......

C'MON!
Allez Federer!

fedfans....

post match interview after the game....roger is on fire!

ROGER Federer showed yesterday why he is adored by Centre Court as he eased into Wimbledon's third round.

Playing with a fluency that was missing in his first-round victory, Federer strolled to a 6-2 6-2 6-4 win against Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Ominously, Federer said there was still plenty more to come from him.

"I didn't have to play my very best today. I had to be solid and that's what I was," Federer said.

"There are many rounds to pass and there will be guys who have nothing to lose against me. But I'm confident and I'm playing great."

Federer, bidding for a record 15th grand slam title, will play German Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the last 32.

"All three sets were pretty similar. He was close to winning the first game and then I broke," Federer said of Garcia-Lopez. "He made the semi-finals in Eastbourne last week, so I couldn't afford to underestimate him."

Federer raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set and then enjoyed another double break in the second against his 26-year-old opponent.

Victory was secured after just 90 minutes on court.

C'MON!
Allez Federer!

to all fedfans......an article written by simon barnes...times online...you can go on there to read the rest...but the gist of it is here......

Roger's looking great, isn't he? What a player. Has anyone ever hit a tennis ball more sweetly? Pause. And then the clincher: and he's such a nice guy.

I have had this conversation a dozen times already this Wimbledon. We love the brilliance of Roger Federer, but somehow his niceness makes it all the better.

Then there's the Rafa conversation. Shame he's not here, I love the way he plays - and he's such a nice guy. We seem to get double value from these two great players. We value brilliance more highly when it is a jewel shining out from a setting of niceness.

Why? And does being nice make it harder to play great tennis, or easier? How do we define niceness in a sporting context? Why do we prefer great athletes to be nice? And what's niceness got to do with sport anyway?

I don't know that Guillermo García-López thinks that Federer is all that nice. Federer exposed every weakness in his game and made him look like a fool before a global audience on Centre Court on Wednesday. Federer was utterly without compassion, picking apart García-López with what looked like sadistic relish.

And I don't suppose Philipp Kohlschreiber, Federer's opponent on Friday, is greatly touched by the Swiss's niceness. He knows that, if given half a chance, Federer will destroy him and leave him with psychological wounds he will carry for the rest of his life. Federer is not nice, not if you have to play tennis against him.

Federer's willingness to inflict pain is one of the things that allows him to win so many matches. Any hint of squeamishness in this department - the sort of thing we generally call choking - makes an athlete vulnerable.

Federer has his vulnerable side. He has shown this in his enthralling rivalry with Nadal. The Spaniard, nice guy that he is, has come close to destroying Federer. He has taken Federer's No 1 slot, robbed him of the Wimbledon Championship last year and then robbed him of a chance to equal the grand-slam record of the great Pete Sampras at the Australian Open this year. Their head-to-head record is a humiliating 13-7 in Nadal's favour.

Their duels have been fought with epic ferocity, tennis as intense as any that has been played. But their rivalry has never been animated by hate. Instead, it has been accompanied by a wonderful and elevating generosity.

Neither will say a bad thing about the other, each is quick to salute the talents of the other. No one has more cause to hate Nadal than Federer and yet he doesn't hate him at all. Instead, a strange kind of love unites them; it is as if each is the other's completion.

No one ever called John McEnroe a nice guy while he was still playing. His appalling behaviour was an affront to us all, even though the brilliance that came with it made him thrillingly watchable. But our best tennis memories of him concern his rivalry with Björn Borg. And with Borg, McEnroe always behaved beautifully. For once, his gloriously intense tennis was married to respect and generosity. And that really is the way we like to see our sport played.

C'MON!
Allez Federer!

:( king of pop gone :( rip talented soul; troubled soul no more...

thnks Malt....I know Barnes gets some criticsm in Brit press but I like him and that piece is really great. Rafa/Roger rivalry is not animated by hate. Would be nice if the fan rivalry was not.
