Former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt joins Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko in the second round of competition at the Championships, following opening-round victories on Tuesday.
(6) Andy Roddick def. Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3
Andy Roddick is through to the second round of the Wimbledon Championships after taking out Jeremy Chardy on Tuesday, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. After taking a two-sets-to-love lead, the sixth seed survived a slight hiccup during the third set, falling down a service break at 4-5. The American regrouped quickly in the fourth, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage before closing the match in two hours and 11 minutes. The 26-year-old, gifting just nine unforced errors on the afternoon, completed the day with 21 aces and 26 winners.
Roddick will take on Igor Kunitsyn in the second round. The Russian came through his opening-round match with Grigor Dimitrov, who retired with injury at 0-4 in the third set.
(12) Nikolay Davydenko def. (WC) Daniel Evans 6-2, 6-3, 6-3
Twelfth seed Nikolay Davydenko avoided another first-round loss early Tuesday, comfortably dismissing hometown wildcard Daniel Evans in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. The Russian makes his way into the Wimbledon Championships second round for just the third time in eight attempts. The 28-year-old displayed his trademark skill on the return of serve, converting eight of 15 break points chances on the afternoon. Davydenko finished the match with 29 winners after one hour and 49 minutes.
Davydenko faces Victor Crivoi in round two. The Romanian prevailed in five sets against Bjorn Phau of Germany, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
Lleyton Hewitt def. Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-1, 6-1
Lleyton Hewitt extends his lead to a perfect 6-0 over Robby Ginepri, following a straight-sets dismissal of the American in the first round Tuesday afternoon. The 28-year-old has advanced to the second round or better in nine of 11 attempts, having taken home the title in 2002. After trailing 1-4 in the opening set, Hewitt cruised the rest of the way to pocket the win in 91 minutes. The veteran Australian cashed in seven of 18 break point opportunities, surrendering serve only once in the match. Hewitt capped off the day with 13 aces and 21 winners.
The former World No. 1 meets current World No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro in the next round. The 20-year-old Argentine crushed first-round opponent Arnaud Clement on Tuesday, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
