  • Murray takes out big-serving Kendrick

    6/23/09 9:20 PM | Cheryl Murray
Murray takes out big-serving Kendrick Great Britain’s native son Andy Murray was put to the test early in his first round match against American Robert Kendrick.

Andy Murray posted a hard-fought four set victory over Robert Kendrick under perfect conditions at Wimbledon on Tuesday. Kendrick has a monster first serve and when it is firing, even the game’s finest returner had difficulty.

Kendrick’s serve was fierce in the first two sets. Murray actually racked up more aces in the opening set, but the American served at an impressive 70%, while Murray languished at 57%. The Scot immediately broke Kendrick to open the match and he held onto his lead until he served at 4-3. Two badly timed unforced errors on the forehand side gave Kendrick the break back.

Murray struggled to hold for 5-5, but with the assistance of a correct challenge, hold he did. The slight shift in momentum back to the Scot showed in the very next game. Murray played an impressive passing shot, then capitalized on a volley error from the American to get the break and ultimately the set.

The second set was the most closely contested of the 4 sets the two men played. They went toe to toe and the set passed with no breaks of serve. The ensuing tiebreak also started on level terms, but a double fault from the Scot at 3-3. Murray did not win another point, and Kendrick tucked away the second set.

The poorly played tie-break seemed to rouse Murray from his passive game. The Scot cleaned up his game and served well to close out the match in 4 sets. Next up for Murray is the struggling Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

Thank God that's over, nerves will not stand much more, first rounds are so dangerous, unseeded players have nothing to lose! Come on Andy UP your game, we know you can do it!

deuce , 6/24/09 6:44 AM

He will deuce! Have faith and save room for all the food I made for the next match--lol! Told ya about it in the other Murray thread!

fan4tennis , 6/24/09 6:56 AM

Have to go back to the kitchen to make more food since remi is joining us! Hmmmmm.........what else should I make?

deuce, do you doubt my sincerity of wishing Murray to do well in this tourney and win it as others (take a wild guess who) have been saying?

fan4tennis , 6/24/09 7:54 PM

fan4t: Ignore them!! We are united, a small select band packed bhind the sofa, gently munching and clutching each other at nerve jangling moments, haven't read any others yet, came straight here off now...IGNORE!!

deuce , 6/24/09 8:52 PM

I had said before I would never answer or post to them again. I'm really trying hard to ignore them. All they want is to fight.

Thank you for including me in your select band! We have to have faith in Murray!!! He can do it! We can enjoy watching him do it while we eat all the munchies (which I hope keeps you from biting your nails to your armpits--lol)!

fan4tennis , 6/24/09 9:09 PM

You can do whatever you want as long as you dont respect the Fed, f4t otherwise it will be obvious that you just dont want Fed to win.

torres9 , 6/24/09 10:34 PM

torres, ever since Rafa withdrew, I have not said anything disrespectful to fed. Just because Rafa is no longer playing, does not mean my allegiance should automatically be given to fed. There are many players to cheer for. You know I have always talked nice about Murray (was one of the few times we said we agreed) so I don't understand why it is all of the sudden strange that I am cheering for Murray! I like Murray's game and his attitude off court!

fan4tennis , 6/24/09 10:46 PM

For Murray fans: This was a nice article and it looks like Andy will be blogging for USATODAY for the rest of Wimby! usatoday.com is their addy so you can favorite it so it is handy!

Andy Murray, Britain's favorite son and the No. 3 player in the world, pleased the home crowd Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 victory vs. Robert Kendrick. Murray will share his thoughts with USA TODAY throughout the tournament.

"I was happy to get through my first-round match and (Wednesday) it's an off day. What I usually do on rest days is come to the courts around midday so that I can practice, see my physiotherapist and get off the grounds by 3. That way I have the evening just to relax. I'll watch some of the tennis on TV or some other programs. If I have time, I'll take my 14-month-old dog, Maggie, out for a walk. I'm not a recluse, but most I spend most of the off-site time at my house.

My mum's doing the cooking ? mostly pasta and chicken, plain stuff that won't upset my stomach. You can't be too adventurous during big events like Wimbledon. If I were at any other tournament, I'd normally eat out. I like Italian and sushi. Yeah, I know, raw fish. It sounds risky. But I go only to quality places, and I've never had a problem. If you go to some dodgy ones, it might not be good.

I'm enjoying having all the guys I work with here in London ? my coach, Miles Maclagan, my physio, Andy Ireland, and my fitness trainer, Matt Little. The trainer I use in the U.S., Jez Green, is even here just as a fan. Some people think I have a big entourage, but personally I don't think that amount of people is any different than what any of the other top players have.

I've been working with Miles since the end of 2007 and it's been a great fit. He's not my first coach, but at every stage of your career you need something different. Miles is very calm, relaxed and a hard worker. We talk things through. It's not like he's in my face and we don't have to spend every minute of every day together. I just want someone who's a calming influence that doesn't get too excited when things are going well and doesn't get too down when things are going badly. I think you need someone who's level headed.
I've heard that my new clothing line with Fred Perry has been described as "sheepish" compared to some of the other outfits making the rounds at Wimbledon such as Federer's military-style warm-up and Serena Williams' double-breasted trench coat. I think my outfits are pretty solid. They are not that far off what I would normally wear. OK, maybe they are a little bit old school. "

fan4tennis , 6/24/09 11:08 PM

fan4tennis: Ta for that, I just love his honesty. What you see is what you get!
Have just read other posts. For goodness sake, what is going on here? You support whoever you like and if you don't want Fed to win, so what???? Although Raf is your favourite, you obviously are a true fan of tennis and are still interested in Grand Slams and it makes them much better if you actively support someone doesn't it?
Am also thrilled remi is back! Quite cosy bhind the sofa now but think Alex is sitting ON the sofa, can you believe it? I can't possibly come out till semis!!

deuce , 6/24/09 11:43 PM

That was a weird match, Murray, honestly has potential yet to be seen. Kendrick obviously an underachiever though, he played far to well to be barely heard of since that match with Nadal.
Still don't think it is Murray's time to win, he is better off winning some other slam first so that the pressure to win a slam is off and he just has the pressure to top Tim Henman by two match wins.

Recordbreaks , 6/25/09 12:12 AM

wassup Recordbreaks. Kendrick, what a talent gone. And Spadea...what's with those two...don't answer. surfer dudes

zoey234 , 6/25/09 12:30 AM

Oh hey Zoey, my eyes are tired from watching Wimby after my exam this morning. TV and testing are on a good day's work. As for Spadea...yikes, I get embarrassed for him sometimes. Surfers? I can't really see Spadea riding the waves unless it is as well as he rhymes. His interviews give me shivers in all the wrong ways. Poor Kendrick.

Recordbreaks , 6/25/09 1:07 AM

ha...spadea...I am watching recorded coverage now...but listened to Andreev/Spadea match live on computer radio...was laughing at wimby radio announcers description of Vinnie...maybe Adam Sandler could write a character based on him.

Anyway...massively talented underachiever Gulbis gonna get dusted by Muzza manana, :(

zoey234 , 6/25/09 1:22 AM

Thanks deuce! I'll post his other blogs as I find them if you want me to. I'm wondering what kind of dog he has now--lol. As far as the rest, I'm tired of thinking I have to justify why I cheer for one player over another. I know some Rafa fans have just stopped watching Wimby or tennis til Rafa is back and I understand that. But I love Wimby and tennis and it's nice to cheer someone on when I watch it. Glad you understand! I truly like Andy and think that it's his time to shine!!!

You might need to find some more tables to put the goodies on for behind the sofa. I did my best to ignore the posters that I said I would never talk to or post at again and I succeeded! Was frustrating seeing all the talk about me, but I decided to bake instead so I've got ALOT of stuff now--LOL!

fan4tennis , 6/25/09 1:40 AM

hey fan4tennis, i think the only problem is that you will have to pick between murray and nole. i have no doubt that there are very few people (maybe none?) who support them both!

stu , 6/25/09 3:01 AM

Very true stu! I also like Nole and speak warmly about him also as I do Murray. Luckily at this point they are on opposite sides of the draw so I can put off thinking of a match between the 2. Am taking it all match by match. I get Nole one day and Murray the next so I stay busy along with my baking! Rafa is my favorite.....I've made no secret of that, but I truly do like BOTH Murray and Nole as the great tennis players that they are! Both of them get overlooked too often!

fan4tennis , 6/25/09 3:18 AM

Stu: although OF COURSE Andy M is my favourite favourite, when nole is on song I love him too, just get really tired with the on court antics, sighing, rolling eyes, trainers, coaches on, fitness issues etc
