Marin Cilic and Igor Andreev are through to the second round of Wimbledon after notching solid opening-round victories on Monday. James Blake crashed out of the tournament, falling to Andreas Seppi in straight sets.
(11) Marin Cilic def. Alberto Martin 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Marin Cilic had little trouble reaching the second round, delivering a straight-sets defeat to Spaniard Alberto Martin, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The 11th seed made his way through to the next round in an hour and 49 minutes. Cilic did not lose serve during the match, saving four of 4 break point chances. The 20-year-old turned in an all-around solid performance, striking 40 winners behind a dozen aces. Cilic enjoyed a comfortable day on serve as well, winning 75% of his first-service points.
The 11th seed will take on American Sam Querrey in round two. Querrey dismissed Danai Udomchoke in the opening round, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
Andreas Seppi def. (17) James Blake 7-5, 6-4, 7-6
Seventeenth-seeded James Blake suffered a shock first-round defeat to unseeded Andreas Seppi Monday afternoon. The American bowed out in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6, exiting the Wimbledon Championships after two hours and 4 minutes of play. The 29-year-old, unable to continue his solid grass-court play over the past few weeks, falls to 19-13 on the season. Blake, the 2009 finalist at Queen’s Club (lost to Murray), had not lost in the first round of Wimbledon since 2005. The American donated 38 unforced errors on the afternoon, surrendering serve four times.
Seppi, battling back from a 0-5 hole in the third set tie-break, moves through to face Frenchman Marc Gicquel in the second round. The Italian advanced to the third round in 2008 before bowing out to eventual semifinalist Marat Safin.
(29) Igor Andreev def. Evgeny Korolev 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6
Igor Andreev leveled the head-to-head series 1-1 with compatriot Evgeny Korolev, rallying from a set down to post a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 opening-round victory on Monday. After splitting the first two sets, the 29th seed fell behind a service break to trail 1-3, but turned the tide in his favor midway through the third. Andreev, securing a trio of service breaks on the day, finished the match with 42 winners and 19 aces.
The 25-year-old Russian is through to the second round of Wimbledon for the fourth time in five attempts. Andreev will clash with 34-year-old veteran American Vincent Spadea in round two.
