  • Federer likes the look of new Wimbledon moveable roof

    6/22/09 12:26 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer likes the look of new Wimbledon moveable roof Roger Federer has given a personal seal of approval to the new Wimbledon Centre court roof - even if weather reports for the first week of the Grand Slam indicate sunny skies and warm weather.

"I went to see Centre Court the other day and it didn't lose anything of the whole history part", said Federer, who could create history of his own if he lifts a 15th Grand Slam title to set an all-time record.

"It still remains the best court in the world. I'm excited to be going out there".

But after installation of the multi-million dollar moveable, translucent roof, some hopes for rain just as a test might be forgiven.

"I'd love to play indoors. I've played in Halle, in Germany, on indoor grass and it worked very well. They even had to once close their roof during the finals".

"We stayed on court, they shut the roof, and we continued on. Then the big rain came".

Should bad weather strike, it takes around eight minutes for the concertina to roll into place high above the court. An air management system will require up to half an hour to remove condensation from the air prior to resuming play.

But officials say the installation of covering and lighting won't mean the introduction of night play, though matches which are still on court as light fades will benefit from the artificial illumination.

But do we like the look of Fed's new Thunderbirds meets Sgt. Pepper outfit and gold lame trimmed accessories?? Fashionistas, your comments start here ...

only fed can carry it off sukhumvit!....pretty certain that the editor of Vogue Anna Wintour had some input with NIKE...it is what's 'in' right now...so it can only be said that fed is a true follower of fashion! And he does love the history...right? in the wimby brochure...you had exactly the same....gold trimmed white blazers...being modelled by Georgio Armani male models....but you know..am more interested in his interview.....

so fedfans...here is half of fed's interview....(the bottom half)......from Lu's match on Monday....

Did you feel any nerves at all today coming into this tournament after the French? Is there a sense that history is behind you propelling you rather than in front of you?

ROGER FEDERER: I missed the question. I'm sorry.

Q. Did you feel any nerves today different than other years?

ROGER FEDERER: No.

Q. How was it different than other years you came on? Is there a sense after having won the French that history is behind you?

ROGER FEDERER: No, nothing to do with the whole history part here. Honestly, I felt the same ?? this is six times I've done it now, opening Centre Court. I always pretty much felt the same. Or five times.

Just that first moment walking out, you know, visualizing, you know, what's gonna come walking down the corridor. Warming up for the first time here at Wimbledon, it's just sometimes not an easy thing to do. But it's a fun thing. It's what you dream about.

Yeah, so it's actually always felt the same. Then you forget about everything that's happened in the past, you, know. If you're a great champion or not, you just want to enjoy the moment and hopefully get off to a good start. You just put your head down.

So there's always nerves in every match, every first?round match at Wimbledon, I would say.

Q. When is the baby due?

ROGER FEDERER: I'm not saying. It's a pity we're moving on with language right now. So sorry (smiling).

Q. The one thing you haven't told is when the baby is due.

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I won't tell you.

Q. Is it going to be this fortnight?

ROGER FEDERER: What did I just say? I'm going to repeat myself: I'm not going to tell you (smiling).

Cheers Fedfans!

C'MON!
Allez Federer!
