Unlikely finalists Benjamin Becker and Raemon Sluiter move through to the finals of the Ordina Open on Saturday. Both players came through their semifinal matches in three sets Friday afternoon.
Benjamin Becker def. (4) Rainer Schuettler 3-6, 7-5, 6-1
German qualifier Benjamin Becker is through to the Ordina Open finals, after a come-from-behind win over compatriot and fourth seed Rainer Schuettler on Friday. The 28-year-old overcame a sluggish start to the semifinal battle, rallying from a set down to book his first trip into a championship match since 2007. Becker has defeated his countryman for the second tournament in a row, following a three-set victory in Halle last week.
After failing to earn a break point chance in the opening set, Becker went on to secure five of 8 service breaks during the 104-minute match. The German served reasonably well by his standards, striking seven aces and winning 71% of his first-service points on the afternoon. Becker, who did not face a break point in the deciding set, finished the contest in style, capturing 93% of his points on first serve. An erratic Schuettler put up little resistance in set three, snagging a poor nine of 20 points.
(WC) Raemon Sluiter def. Ivan Navarro 6-7, 6-2, 6-3
Veteran wildcard Raemon Sluiter delighted a partisan crowd during the second-semifinal match of the day on Friday, becoming the lowest-ranked player to advance to an ATP World Tour final. The Dutch World No. 866 reaches his first title match since 2003.
Sluiter held his nerves in check, recovering from blown opportunity to serve for a one-set lead at 5-3 in the opening set. The 31-year-old regrouped early in the second set, pocketing a break of serve to go ahead 3-1. Sluiter quickly earned a set point at 5-2, leveling the match at a set apiece. Navarro seemed to lose confidence midway through the decider, coughing up a break of serve on a costly double fault at 3-4. Sluiter served for a place in the finals at 5-3, completing the contest in two hours and 10 minutes.
