Rainer Schuettler needed seven match points to clinch a spot in the semifinals of the Ordina Open late Thursday. Defending champion David Ferrer fell in straight sets to compatriot Ivan Navarro.
Ivan Navarro def. (3) David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2
Ivan Navarro recorded his first win over countryman David Ferrer on Thursday, upsetting the third seed and defending champion in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Thursday’s triumph marks the second upset of the tournament for the 27-year-old, following his solid round of 16 ousting of 2008 Ordina Open runner-up and sixth seed Marc Gicquel.
Ferrer could not take advantage of multiple chances to break throughout the 81-minute clash, failing to convert five of 5 break points. Navarro held strong in the second set without dropping serve, capitalizing on a very poor 29% of second serves won by Ferrer, who surrendered serve three times during the match.
Navarro advances to his first semi on a grass court, returning to the final four of a tournament for the first time in more than two years. The Spaniard moves on to face veteran wildcard Raemon Sluiter in the semifinals.
Sluiter rallied from a set deficit to knock out Dudi Sela in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
(4) Rainer Schuettler def. (7) Jeremy Chardy 7-6, 3-6, 7-6
Fourth seed Rainer Schuettler is through to his first semi at the Ordina Open in five attempts. The German veteran fought off three match points against a resurgent Frenchman to prevail in three hard-fought sets on Thursday, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.
Chardy looked to have the momentum in his favor, clawing his way out of a set and a break deficit. The Frenchman took a break lead to forge ahead 4-3 in the deciding set, but failed to close the match serving for it at 5-4.
A third-set tie-break would follow, Schuettler maintaining a lead throughout to collect four match points at 6-2. The German failed to win the first three, then donated the fourth on a costly double fault. Chardy saved two additional match points, but missed a trio of opportunities to close after squandering a trio of his own. Schuettler held on to win the point at 12-11, cashing in his 7th match point after two hours and 30 minutes of play.
Schuettler takes on fellow German Benjamin Becker in the semis. The qualifier defeated Michael Llodra of France in straight sets early Thursday, 7-6, 7-5.
