Andy Murray has got to drop his dour Scot look if he's to win fans at Wimbledon. That's the opinion of British television commentator and former junior champion Annabel Croft, who says the third seed really could do with the occasional smile.
Even when Murray won his first grass title at Queen's club at the weekend, the celebration of joy was understated at best.
"I think he's still got a long way to go in that department to try to get the public 100 percent behind him, to adore him", Croft told London's Daily Mail.
"At the Queen's final the audience was still very mixed. A lot of them would have been quite happy if (James) Blake had won."
And Croft added that Team Murray needs to do some work on the player's public persona. "When he went of a walk around the court with the trophy, people were leaving".
"He maybe needs to be himself and smile more. I think he's learned a lot in the last year. It's about growing up and being confident and just being a bit chirpier".
But even an outwardly grumpy demenaour can't dent Murray's possible title chances at Wimbledon. "Murray could win it. Winning at Queen's was the perfect preparation, he's so tough mentally - even though he's yet to prove it over five sets".

if its a roger - muzz match ...im dead sure that roger will be getting more support .... even though muzz is "local" ( in a way) ..
Anyways ...Murray should concentrate on his game ...all this rubbish should be secondary...
C'MON !!

ROLF zoey ...ahahhhaha ....nice to see ur back ! malt needs to have a pep talk with u :P
C'MON !!
fedexfan , 6/18/09 5:30 PM
I think his face is naturally like that or is it because he frowns? I never see him smile but only Fed smiles now and then during a match. The young guns are all so serious.....
torres9 , 6/18/09 6:09 PM
Keep your nose out Ms. croft! Just go away! And go away those PR men in oily suits and oily smiles. And's the way he is, delightfully different and those of us who love his tennis love him just the way he is!
And Torres9 he smiles, he really does, usually for Sue Barker when she interviews him, but I think he's kinda shy and very private so that stuffs difficult. Let the racquet do the talking!
deuce , 6/18/09 6:45 PM
In all honesty I didn't even watch the entire match, but if I I was THERE watching in the crowd I would have watched him collect the trophy, I want my monies worth. I guess I little more "joy" could help him out with the fans. He smiles during the interviews...I think that is a start. Lets see him when he wins a Slam in the next few years. I complain if he doesn't wig then.
I mean, I personally think Del Potro is the worst, he never really changed facial expressions, at least Murray gets frustrated.
Recordbreaks , 6/18/09 8:03 PM
I'm right with ya deuce. Muzz, don't let Croft and all these pr folk 'produce' you. Just be yourself.
Pleasing the Wimbie fans would be a nice bonus, but as Jonny Mac proved (and he NEVER lost his pouted lip) such things are not necessary to win wimbledon.
Here's to the Real McMuzz :::::(((((
alex , 6/18/09 11:32 PM
yep, put a smile on Mr. McGrumpy.
posmatrac , 6/19/09 12:29 AM
Is Annabel Croft a stunning looker or its just me?
orion , 6/19/09 1:26 AM
She's quite cute and smiles a lot which probably is why he wants Murray to be like him but I think a forced smile is worst than a frown.
Should Muzza win this or beat Fed, he will gain a lot of momentum and would probably be no.1 at the end of the year. I think the most eagerly anticipated match for me is Fed Vs Gregor Dimitrov if they are destined to meet.
torres9 , 6/19/09 3:17 AM
Someone correct me if I'm wrong cos every time I think I've got my head around these rankings I get it wrong again, but is it right that if rafa pulls out (loses 2,000 points?) and muzz wins the tourny (gains 1,650 points?) then muzz becomes No.1?
alex , 6/19/09 11:59 AM
alex don't! Enough people out there hate our Andy as it is! You'll only inflame them further! One step at a time!!
deuce , 6/19/09 1:38 PM
i don't think rafa will pull out. with the bad knee though, he may be less competitive and lose early. the wimbledon website says murray's draw is tough, but i don't think so at all...if rafa underperforms, i'd say murray has an easy path to the finals!
stu , 6/19/09 3:01 PM
Murray is a struggler on and of the court..
I hav seen his interviews , he looks like an android , if he is to become a flamboyant person on court he has to bring a bit of flamboyancy in his game first...
jibi , 6/19/09 3:47 PM
alex, if that happens i think it will finally put to rest the debate about the ranking system being unfair. murray has had a stellar year, but rafa has had an even better one. his record has been flawless in the hard and clay court seasons. one early loss at a grand slam and one pull out should not mean that he loses his #1 place after having had such a huge lead.
stu , 6/19/09 4:58 PM
stu...
the ranking system evaluates player's consistency, and improvements...the same happened to roger in 2008...he won a GS ,was in the final of 2,and semis of 1. but he lost the spot to a more consistent and improving player.if it was a 2 year ranking system I think he would not have lost the spot to Rafa which would have been unfair because Rafa was the bettter player at that time. by the way Rafa has not pulled out yet,and I really hope he does not! !
niloofar , 6/19/09 5:15 PM
niloofar, my point is that Rafa _has_ been consistently improving, at the same pace as Murray if not better. Sure roger won a GS and was in the finals of 2, but who won those 2 finals? Rafa! That has not been the case with Murray. I don't understand your argument.
stu , 6/19/09 5:46 PM
stu ..just to add a little to niloofar ..tennis is pretty much all about GS's ...all Masters series are mostly buildup's to GS's . There are 4 in a year and to loose early in one and not participate ( i hope this does not happen) in another will and should reflect in the ranking position considering the importance of the GS ..its no ATP MS series .
You might say that there is too much importance/ weightage placed on the GS's ....but then again ....i think it is all THAT important . And most players would agree with how big the GS's are and how much a win means .
C'MON !
fedexfan , 6/19/09 5:49 PM
if tennis is all about GS', then why on earth can Muzz being #1 be justified?!!!
stu , 6/19/09 6:57 PM
Just look at the points allocated, stu. The weight of the points are given to GS's. GS's are the big time, baby...you don't make immortal tennis history as the best ever to win masters events...
zoey234 , 6/19/09 7:14 PM
Geez stu, I only asked a question:)
You obviously believe it can happen - I'd be very happily amazed.
Sorry deuce - I know I was mischievous beyond the limit.
alex , 6/19/09 7:18 PM
Rafa pulled out, thus giving Muzz a free pass to the finals.
stu , 6/19/09 8:48 PM
I know Andy likes and respects Rafa .. but ... I'll bet he has a smile on now.
smr , 6/19/09 9:21 PM
stu: I don't know which planet you live on but there are no free passes to any grand slam final. Have you tried playing 6 five set matches to get there and then the grand prize is.....another 5 setter ......
deuce , 6/20/09 12:16 AM
deuce: everyone else got what i meant. take off your blinkers.
stu , 6/20/09 4:48 AM
@Alex about the rankings...
Its a bit complicated analyzing all the scenarios. So let's do a simple thing.Let's assume that both Murray and Federer reach the finals. Then this will be the situation...
If Federer def Murray
1-Federer-11220
2-Nadal-10735
3-Murray-9930
If Murray def Federer
1-Nadal-10735
2-Murray-10730
3-Federer-10420
Ragavendran , 6/20/09 7:54 AM
stu: "everyone else" hmm there's another sweeping statement. Part of being a champ is turning up for the job and getting the job done. Suppose you also think Fed did not deserve RG trophy because the final was a "free ride" too?
deuce , 6/20/09 8:28 AM
stu -
re- rafa being at least if not more improved than muzz. Simply not true.
rafa's h2h with the rest of the top 4 went from 17-7 pre-Wimby 2008 to 11-4 since (and including) Wimby 2008. Granted, remarkable that such an already-brilliant player has managed to keep on improving.
But over exactly the same periods muzz's h2hs with the top 4 has gone from 2-8 to 95. Really no comparison. Not only that but the muzz-rafa h2h over the same periods went from 0-3 to 2-4 (not including the exo this January where muzz beat rafa and fed nack to back) - if muzz is catching up on rafa how can rafa possibly be improving at an equal or greater rate.
By the way, really sorry rafa's out of wimby despite it narrowing the ranking gap for muzz. It will be a real loss to the tourny.
alex , 6/20/09 11:45 AM
I have a feeling Delpo will take Andy out. Just a feeling. Delpo forehand and backhand is as devastating as Nadal's. Difference is only speed.
No offense to Muzza fans
torres9 , 6/21/09 6:30 AM
No offence taken torres9 but to me speed is very important on grass, also on grass ball bounces much lower so more difficult for him to return, also as we saw at French Open Delpo has fitness issues. Also, for me, compared to Andy his game lacks variety and subtlety. I prefer magicians to ball bashers.
deuce , 6/21/09 8:01 AM
I always root against Andy Murray. He just seems so very arrogant. Maybe he's not, but he sure seems that way. My favorite is Novak Djokovic. Love him.
hammonddog , 6/21/09 10:27 AM
hammonddog: well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and he seems completely the opposite to me. Eg. b4 Rafa pulled out, asked about his chances he said, "Roger and Rafa are the favourites, I'm in the NEXT group." Pray tell me what's arrogant about that.
