Marcos Baghdatis was wheeled off the court on a gurney late Wednesday afternoon after a left-knee injury forced him to retire. Defending champion David Ferrer advances to the quarterfinals.
(WC) Raemon Sluiter def. Marcos Baghdatis 4-3 (Ret’d)
Marcos Baghdatis looked well on his way to capturing his round of 16 match against hometown wildcard veteran Raemon Sluiter on Wednesday. The Cypriot secured a break of serve at 3-2, pulling ahead on a trademark backhand winner up the line. Baghdatis lost his footing as Sluiter served at 3-4, falling to the ground clutching his left knee. In visible agony, the 23-year-old could not continue the match.
Sluiter moves into the quarterfinals to face Dudi Sela of Israel. Sela upset fifth-seeded Igor Kunitsyn in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-3.
(3) David Ferrer def. Oscar Hernandez 6-4, 6-3
Defending champion David Ferrer extends his perfect record at the Ordina Open to 7-0, following a straight-sets defeat of countryman Oscar Hernandez. The third seed knocked out his fellow Spaniard 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 early Wednesday, booking a place in his second consecutive quarterfinal.
Ferrer turned in a strong performance during his round of 16 battle, clocking five aces while holding nine of 10 service games. The 27-year-old enjoyed a good day on the return of serve as well, converting three of 5 break point opportunities. The third seed took advantage of a weak second-service percentage from Hernandez, who won just 10 of 28 points in set two of the 83-minute clash.
The defending champion played a tidy second set, winning 21 of 26 points in total. Ferrer cleaned up his own slumping second serve, improving from a poor 27% in the opening set to a solid 83% in the second.
Ferrer takes to the court against compatriot Ivan Navarro in the quarterfinals. Navarro dismissed 2008 runner-up Marc Gicquel in the round of 16, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Ouch, what bad luck for Baghdatis, sometimes the spirit is just stronger than the body.
Wish him a speedy recovery.
