  • Tursunov, Santoro move on in Eastbourne

Tursunov, Santoro move on in Eastbourne Dmitry Tursunov and Fabrice Santoro are victorious at the AEGON International on Monday afternoon. They are joined in the Eastbourne second round by Sam Querrey.

    (2) Dmitry Tursunov d. Fabio Fognini 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Tursunov has been injured for almost half of the season, but he overcame rust and a poor serving day to win his opener at the AEGON International on Monday afternoon in Eastbourne, Great Britain. The second-seeded Russian dispatched Fognini in three sets after one hour and 59 minutes of play. A back-and-forth match saw the second-seeded Russian win the first set without facing a single break point, but he got broken three times in the second, including at 4-5. Tursunov, however, turned things around in the final frame of play and dropped only seven points in five service games. As a result, a lone break in the third was enough for Tursunov to set up a second-round encounter with wild card James Ward.

    (4) Fabrice Santoro d. Robert Kendrick 6-3, 6-2

Despite facing Kendrick on a surface that is conducive to the big-serving American's power, Santoro needed just one hour and one minute to dispatch Kendrick. Santoro broke once in the first set and made the advantage stand up by saving all four of the break points he faced. Kendrick was never competitive in set two, dropping serve twice and winning a mere three points in four return games. Perhaps the stat of the match is that Santoro won 65 percent of the points in which his opponent had to toss in a second serve. Next up for the veteran Frenchman is another American, Robby Ginepri.

    (6) Sam Querrey d. Paul Capdeville 6-2, 7-5

Querrey, one of the biggest servers on the ATP Tour, proved to be far too much for Capdeville on grass. Although the second set was relatively competitive, the 6'6'' American needed just 51 minutes to advance to the Eastbourne second round, where he will take on Denis Istomin. Querrey fired an amazing 19 aces in only 10 service games. Capdeville, a Chilean who much prefers clay, stayed on serve until 5-5 in the second, but Querrey broke at that point and promptly served things out in routine fashion.
