Top seed Fernando Verdasco and second seed Tommy Robredo are out of the Ordina Open, following straight-sets losses in the second round of play on Tuesday.
(Q) Benjamin Becker def. (1) Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 7-6
German qualifier Benjamin Becker recorded his first-career win over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco late Tuesday afternoon, sending the top seed packing in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6. The 28-year-old, through to the Ordina Open final eight for the second time, collects his fourth grass-court win of the season after reaching the quarterfinals in Halle last week.
Both players held serve comfortably until 4-4 in the opening set, Verdasco earning two set points at 5-4 on the Becker serve. The top seed failed to convert either one, and fell behind break point on his own serve in the following game. The German capitalized on a sloppy backhand error from the Spaniard, reaching 6-5 to serve for a one-set lead.
The second set played out exactly as the first set, each competitor holding serve until 4-4. Verdasco looked to level the match at a set apiece, collecting set point at 5-4 on the German’s serve. Becker fought off the charge again, courtesy a well-placed first serve. Verdasco faced a couple of break points in the next game, but held on to push the second set into a tie-break.
The Spaniard trailed 0-3 in the tie-break, but closed the gap after winning three of the next four points. Becker regained the lead at 5-3, helped by double fault No. 7 from Verdasco. The German reached match points on serve, finishing the 104-minute match with an overhead smash.
Becker moves on to face Michael Llodra in the round of 16. The Frenchman defeated Belgian qualifier Kristof Vliegen in his second-round match, 6-2, 6-3.
Marcos Baghdatis def. (2) Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-2
Marcos Baghdatis extends his lead to 3-0 in the head-to-head series with Tommy Robredo. The Cypriot turned in a solid 7-5, 6-2 second-round performance to knock out the second-seeded Spaniard, advancing to the Ordina Open quarters for the first time since his tournament debut in 2006.
The 24-year-old completed the day with 5 aces, winning 82% of his first-service points and 67% of his second. Baghdatis showcased his strength on the return of serve, securing four of 8 break point opportunities. The Cypriot, never facing a break point in the second set, took full advantage of a struggling Robredo, who won a poor 30% of his points on second serve.
Baghdatis will take on veteran wildcard Raemon Sluiter in the round of 16. The 31-year-old won his first match of the season on Sunday, dismissing Daniel Gimeno Traver 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round.
