(3) David Ferrer def. (WC) Jesse Huta Galung 6-2, 7-5
Defending champion and third seed David Ferrer extends his win streak to 6-0 at the Ordina Open, following a straight-sets dismissal of wildcard Jesse Huta Galung on Monday. The Spaniard survived patches of spotty play during the match to take out the 23-year-old 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 34 minutes. Ferrer, led 5-2 in the opening set, was able to take advantage of repeated forehand-wing errors from Huta Galung. The 27-year-old faced a tougher task in the second set, needing to dig his way out of a 0-3 hole. After reaching parity midway through the second, Ferrer broke to serve for the match at 6-5, closing on an unreturnable serve. The defending champion moves on to face compatriot Oscar Hernandez in the second round.
(4) Rainer Schuettler def. Nicolas Devilder 6-4, 7-6
Fourth seed Rainer Schuettler moves on to round two, overcoming multiple service breaks during key points in his match against Nicolas Devilder Monday afternoon. The veteran German, who missed his first opportunity to serve for the opening set at 5-2, held on to finish the set 6-4 after 35 minutes of play. Schuettler, leading by a break throughout most of the second set, looked to close the match serving at 5-4. Devilder secured a service break, eventually pushing the set to a tie-break. The Frenchman seemed poised to level the match, earning a trio of set points at 6-3. Schuettler denied all three, going on to win 5 consecutive points to pocket the tie-break 8-6. The fourth seed will take on the winner of the opening-round match between compatriot Bjorn Phau and Thiemo De Bakker.
(6) Marc Gicquel def. Steve Darcis 6-2, 6-3
2008 Ordina Open runner-up and sixth seed Marc Gicquel had little trouble dismissing Steve Darcis in the first round, snagging a straight-sets win, 6-2, 6-3. The Frenchman, completing the match unbroken, collected three set points at 5-2, closing the opening set in a short 23 minutes. Gicquel took a break lead at 3-1 in the second set, holding comfortably to reach 5-3 on serve. The Frenchman fell behind break point while serving for the match, but hung on to convert his second match point opportunity after one hour of play. Gicquel will do battle with Spaniard Ivan Navarro in the second round.
