Tennis fans have one more opportunity to enjoy the excitement of a grass-court tournament before the commencement of Wimbledon next week. Play begins at the Ordina Open on Sunday.
Fernando Verdasco, Tommy Robredo and defending champion David Ferrer top the list of seeds among a solid field of players looking to build some all-important momentum as they make final preparations for Wimbledon.
Top seed Verdasco returns to the tournament for the first time since his debut in 2004. The 25-year-old reached the quarterfinals before falling to compatriot and second seed Tommy Robredo.
Three-time semifinalist Robredo is 15-7 lifetime at the Ordina Open, advancing to the final four in 2001, 2002 and 2004. The second seed faces a tough first-round opponent in the 2006 Wimbledon semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis.
Third seed David Ferrer heads back to the Ordina Open this week, aiming for a successful title defense in his second trip to the tournament. The 27-year-old holds a perfect 5-0 record leading into his opening-round clash with 147th-ranked wildcard Jesse Huta Galung.
Other seeded competitors include 33-year-old veteran Rainer Schuettler, Igor Kunitsyn, making his Ordina Open debut, 2008 runner-up Marc Gicquel and Jeremy Chardy. Talented German Mischa Zverev, set for an opening-round clash with 2004 champion Michael Llodra, rounds out the top 8.
