Robby Ginepri and Janko Tipsarevic reach the Eastbourne second round on Sunday afternoon. They take out Andrey Golubev and Paul-Henri Mathieu, respectively.
Robby Ginepri d. Andrey Golubev 6-3, 6-4
Ginepri had won just two matches at the ATP level prior to his arrival at the AEGON International, but he made quick work of Golubev on Sunday afternoon. The 114th-ranked American needed exactly one hour to reach the Eastbourne second round.
Ginepri consolidate a lone break of serve in the first set by saving the two break points he faced. He finally surrendered serve in set two, but it made little difference because he made up for it by breaking Golubev twice more. Four double-faults while serving at just over 50 percent doomed Golubev's efforts. Next up for Ginepri is either No. 4 seed Fabrice Santoro or fellow American Robert Kendrick.
Janko Tipsarevic d. (3) Paul Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2
Tipsarevic broke a 2-2 tie in his head-to-head series with Mathieu by prevailing in surprisingly easy fashion on the grass courts of Eastbourne. It took an hour and 27 minutes for Tipsarevic to win this first-round encounter and pull off the first upset of the AEGON International.
The 54th-ranked Serb was in completely control the entire way, amassing an amazing 17 break-point opportunities throughout the proceedings. Tipsarevic only capitalized on three of them, but that was more than enough for victory since he never got broken. He did not even face a single break point in the second set. Both men fired eight aces, but Tipsarevic was far more successful with the rest of his first-serve points, winning 90 percent when he put in his first offering. Tipsarevic will now do battle with either Teimuraz Gabashvili or Brydan Klein.
