Juan Carlos Ferrero continued his surprising run through the AEGON Championships with a victory over Belgium’s Xavier Malisse. Also advancing was Mardy Fish of the United States.
Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Xavier Malisse 6-4, 7-6(4)
Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero has gotten a second wind. The one-time world No. 1 has seen his ranking slip to 90 in the world, but at the moment he is playing at a level far above his ranking. Ferrero had more aces in the opening set than opponent Xavier Malisse, quite a feat since Malisse is known as a big hitter. The Spaniard was able to secure a single break of serve to take a set lead. Malisse continued to fight in the second set. The Belgian fought off 3 break points to force a tiebreaker, but Ferrero was the stronger of the two and won 7-4 to take the match. Ferrero will take on another Belgian, Steve Darcis.
Mardy Fish def. Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4
In another shocker, Mardy Fish completely decimated Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Given the fact that Lopez is known as a big server who has a liking for quicker surfaces, the nature of the win is surprising. Fish sent 12 aces past Lopez for the match and the American did not face a single break point on his way to the 51 minute victory. Perhaps most interesting of all was Fish’s first serve percentage, which was an impressive 92% in the first set (he missed just one serve). Lopez was able to compete a little better in the second set, but he was still no match for Fish. The American will meet the top tournament seed and crowd favorite Andy Murray in the quarterfinals on Friday.
