  • Ferrero upsets Mathieu, Malisse forges ahead

    6/11/09 4:45 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrero upsets Mathieu, Malisse forges ahead The big upset of the day was presented courtesy of Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero, who took out No. 11 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-4

Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero, ranked No. 90 in the world, surprised France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu with a straight set victory. The Spaniard served particularly well for the match. He struck 15 aces past Mathieu and generally played much better than his low ranking would suggest. Mathieu had no answer to Ferrero’s groundstrokes. The Spaniard was able to break Mathieu 3 times for the match, while being broken only once himself. Ferrero will take on Xavier Malisse in the third round.

Xavier Malisse def. Rik De Voest 7-6(6), 7-6(8)

Belgian qualifier Xavier Malisse was supposed to play Marat Safin, but the Russian pulled out of the tournament at the last minute with a back injury. Instead, Malisse got lucky loser Rik De Voest from South Africa. The match was quite closely played. Each man was able to secure a single break of serve in each set, but it was Malisse who was able to keep his head in the two tiebreakers to pull out the straight set win. Malisse’s next opponent will be the Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero.

i was wondering where the sexy man who won had gotten to. i like both players but good to see ferro back into it. matts himself is outstanding and needs to re-a-lax more. hopefully all will go well for wimbledon. my flatmate already has said most our 'foxtel' channels have been removed. wooph, what next? ha ha.

Vamos Juan! I certainly love to see him win (especially if we can't have any Marat in the tournament at all).

Wasn't he hoisting a clay trophy in South America this past season?
