Tommy Haas takes out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round of the Gerry Weber Open on Wednesday. Next up for Haas is fellow German Mischa Zverev.
The night-session crowd at Halle, Germany's Gerry Weber got what it came to see on Wednesday. Tommy Haas put on a sizzling display of tennis, treating his German fans to a 6-3, 7-6 upset of fourth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Both players headed into this blockbuster clash in fine form; Tsonga was 32-9 for his 2009 campaign going into Wednesday and Haas was coming off a fourth-round appearance at the French Open. It was Haas who came out blazing, playing a near-flawless first set. The world No. 41 lost a mere three points in his first five service games, so a single break of his own was easily enough to take a one-set advantage.
Neither player could break serve throughout the second frame of play, but both overcame plenty of obstacles en route to the tiebreaker. Tsonga blasted his way out of a 0-40 hole at 3-3 with a flurry of massive second serves. The ninth-ranked Frenchman ended up turning back four break points and Haas saved three on the way to the decider. Haas even survived five double-faults in the second set, but he could do no wrong in the 'breaker. He closed out Tsonga seven points to three, securing a quarterfinal spot after one hour and 19 minutes.
"We both played extremely well; served well," explained Haas. "I didn’t look at the statistics but I’m sure there were more winners than unforced errors from both sides. It was a great match. Obviously, I think I played at the level as good as I can play at times, especially when it came to the big points."
Next up for Haas is countryman Mischa Zverev, who saved two match points before ousting Tomas Berdych 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker. Haas and Zverev have never met head-to-head.

Haas was really on fire - great to watch!
I was surprised with court (grass) quality though: after 3 days only, Central Court looks like Wimbledon's at finals (after 2 weeks of action). Very strange, and I think it will start affecting the game.

I view the statistics obviously and definitely it did seem a dangerous game. So playing the best they could, it would be difficult for Tson with Hasy right there in the second. It would've been a massive shock for Tson but overall, the best thing was to try and settle the score which just went Hasy's way. Of course, it's good that one favourite player is through . Justly, so many games seem exactly as this one. I am just so thrilled somehow that I can look over my shoulder and know that all my fave men players are still playing today. The shockingest thing is though, that he, Hasy, is still playing quite tough for his age. Well done dear and just do it....

Great performance from Haas, I think he can trouble Nole should they meet.
