The once up-and-coming Latvian Ernests Gulbis was ousted in the first round at the AEGON Championships. Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero advanced.
Alberto Martin def. Ernests Gulbis 7-6(9), 6-4
Ernests Gulbis dismal 2009 season continued on Tuesday in London as the Latvian youngster was ousted in the first round of Queens Club by Spaniard Alberto Martin. The loss is particularly notable because Martin is largely a clay court specialist. The two men traded breaks of serve in the first set and the tiebreaker was closely contested; Martin finally took the lead with an 11-9 scoreline. Gulbis struggled mightily on serve in the second set. Martin had 9 chances to break serve (he converted 1). The single break of serve was enough to give the Spaniard the match.
Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Sebastien Grosjean 6-2, 2-1 ret.
Sebastien Grosjean’s bum shoulder was the culprit in another match retirement from the Frenchman. Grosjean was barely able to dink in his first serve, which Ferrero understandably pounced on. The win marks the 400th of Ferrero’s lengthy career. Grosjean meanwhile, will try to rehabilitate the chronic shoulder injury that has literally kept him out of professional tennis since October of 2008. Ferrero will take on Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round.

I don't get Ernie, at all. He was brimming with talent. So, is he just a big underachiever , late bloomer, satisfied at #69? and dropping.

I wish a certain someone was in London instead of Halle so she could hit Gulbis flush on the chin w/ her stilettos.
Normally I wouldn't greenlight any type of punitive behavior, but a loss to Beto on grass?! Diabolical showing for Gulbis.
He needs a coach, a shrink, a snake charmer....
