  • Bookies look to Federer for new Grand Slam record

    6/10/09 4:35 PM | Johan Lindahl
Bookies look to Federer for new Grand Slam record Roger Federer has the solid backing of British bookmakers to break through to a 15th career Grand Slam title.

His chances of setting the new standard have been cut to 11/10 (2.10) from 5/4 (2.25) to get the job done after completing his resume with his first French Open crown.

"With doubts over (Rafael) Nadal's fitness (knee tendinitis) there's a feeling of inevitability that Federer will make further history on Centre Court in a few weeks", said a spokesman for Ladbrokes of London.

"With the French Open monkey off his back, Federer is nailed on to break the record. Even if he misses out in SW19 he's still got the US Open at his mercy this year. We'd be surprised if he fails to bag at least one of the two".

Federer completed his matched set of Grand Slam titles at the weekend with his Roland Garros title over Swede Robin Söderling.

Should he opt to play, Nadal is 5/2 (3.50) to defend his Wimbledon crown with Scot Andy Murray a 3/1 (4.00) third favorite after the leading two.

What pressure to add to the Fed, though the bookies might not be who he looks too. Honestly, I think Nadal is fine maybe mental pain is pushing buttons, but Federer might feel a little better this year. I'm not sure hes odds really should change though, or be higher then Nadals, considering all at stake, both are about equal.* I love that this doesn't mention Nole.

Nadal has to defend the title and points to go with it to retain his number 1 ranking. I think Federer can relax quite a bit having at least equalled Pete's 14. There's definitely less pressure trying to set new records than to try to equal an old record. By not setting a new record, he can at least rest easy that he shares the record with the previous best.

Enough with the records, Fed has already broke a lot of records already. Let's just enjoy the tennis. I hope Nole doesn't disappear. I think Nole is good enough to win another Slam.

torres9 , 6/11/09 2:57 AM

Nole and Tsonga were not favs in AO 2008.

posmatrac , 6/11/09 3:39 AM

I really doubt Roger gets Wimby this year...lets be realistic-He isnt at the height of his powers.Sure the FO win puts him as a favourite and his past record helps too but nothing is a safe bet as of now.Of course I'd love to see him get atleast 1 more Wimbledon crown and I know it means hell a lot to him but this year-I dont see it happening.

janhavi , 6/11/09 7:23 AM

Only after seeing Roger play after his WIN at Roland Garros will we be able to assess what kind of a difference (if any) the WIN at RG has helped Roger relax, and play more into his game with fun. I'm really looking forward to it! Roger Federer is my favourite to WIN Wimbledon 2009. Why NOT?! His chances of WINNING are as good as any. If we can believe the pressure being lifted from his shoulders (as he claims) from the WIN at RG; we can naturally also believe in a WIn at Wimbledon! Why NOT?! LOL Wouldn't that be another AMAZING happening?! Let's see what happens. C'MON Roger! Cheers FEdfans! :)

sky , 6/11/09 8:57 AM

janhavi...for an alleged federer fan..you seem mighty negative my friend.....
I have no doubt that Roger can and will win wimbledon..that has been on his agenda for almost a year now.....he'll also go on to defend the USO and he will be No. 1 by the end of the year....why not? as you say sky....

If roger has put in the hard work (which he has), now has the self-belief back (which he has)....and actually goes on to the court with a game plan (which he has)...he has EVERY chance of completing a 3 slam win this year....and lets face it....he's been here before TWICE...winning 3 slams per year and that was without a coach...so why not?
have faith janhavi....and by the way...where were you when all fedfans were watching the FO?
Sky...how are you buddy? not long to go now for wimby.......yey!
C'MON!
Allez Federer!

malteser1 , 6/11/09 10:06 AM

I'm good malteser1! I'm GOOD! (nice to see your posts as always) LOL I miss not having the FED playing just yet, but I'm totally in agreement with his decision, and of course as you say Wimbledon is just around the corner... I believe we are in for a neat treat! C'MON Roger! Come ONNNNNN!!!! LOL Lets ROCK!!! :)

sky , 6/11/09 10:26 AM

fed on grass ....
i think people tend to forget that this is the surface he was born to play on ....
he can have an extremely bad day in the office and yet he will somehow manage to pull himself into the finals ....
Never count fed out on grass !
He can show up with his legs tied together and use his left hand to play on a grass court ...ill still rout for fed :)

C'MON !!!

fedexfan , 6/11/09 10:40 AM

Lol malty..I'm just not taking anything for granted.I'd be ecstatic if that happens but I've seen my hope shatter too often..so when Roger wins its like a pleasant surprise..and I prefer a pleasant surprise to a disappointment arising out of expectations.I pray he wins every single time but I like to prepare for the worst.
Also like I said..after this FO,anything that comes is a bonus for me.

janhavi , 6/11/09 10:50 AM

Before the year start, if i was given a choice that Fed would win FO or take back Wimby, I'll definitely choose Fed winning FO.^^

torres9 , 6/11/09 11:50 AM

Hi janhavi....sky...torres.....
Janhavi...its not about preparing for a 'disappointment'...it's all about belief and positivity for fed...i believe in his game....of course....if he has a bad day....my love of his game will not change one little bit.....he is by far and away...just an incredibly amazing player.....
so it isn't actually taking things for granted...and i believe it is so easy for people to think of federer in a negative way and i just won't go there...cos there is no point...

it is just saying that he has the ability, capacity, and will to win....this is something that he made very clear 12 months ago.....(irrespective of the FO)...that getting wimbledon back was his NUMBER ONE priority....i believe he is well and truly in that mindset now...he has programmed his mind like arnie...the terminator....you know....'I'LL BE BACK'...and i believe he will....and i for one, cannot wait......

torres...i know what you are saying....FO was HUGELY important for federer and i am still so happy.....so very happy....for him....for his dreams...it is just 'most excellent' buddy..

As for wimby...i am excited 'cos i have tickets and what i will do torres, sky, zoey, fedex,in particular...is to TRY to get signed letters...etc...so i can get them for you as well and send them on to you somehow...i will do my best....

Federer rocks!
Allez Federer!

Liked this interview, Fed's interview is for me the best because he's so articulate. Another example of him praising Rafa, Rafa fans should watch this.

torres9 , 6/11/09 12:35 PM

I get you malteser but I'm a big chicken.LOL.I just dont dare to hope nowadays.
But I pray and pray earnestly.I do believe in him..but I also know at the back of my mind that he isnt in his peak years anymore and now,he has a significant life coming beyond tennis.
As to your question of where I was -I was either busy due some work or I was under the bed covers, yelling at TV,etc.Never had so many heart attacks before.ROFL :D

janhavi , 6/11/09 12:40 PM

signed letters...etc... so i can get them for you as well and send them to you somehow...

malteser1 that is such a "BEAUTIFUL/LOVING" thought, thank you for that, you know I will not love you any more or less, but if it can be DONE!!! Wow!!! but I don't hold you up to it, not one bit. I hope you have a GREAT time being at Wimbledon (all for the right reasons, you know what they are) Most of all our FED WINNING! LOL :)

sky , 6/11/09 12:57 PM

nice interview torres! thank you! Roger Federer is so well spoken, and sounds just a like a regular guy. He is obviously happy! And well he should be! He WANTS that WIMBY WIN! He REALLY does!!! Let's see what happens. :)

sky , 6/11/09 1:07 PM

nice post torres ...thanks for the interview .
Fed is showing a lot of confidence in himself and respect for rafa in that interview . Very straight to the point ....
U just got to love the guy....

C'MON !!!

fedexfan , 6/11/09 1:19 PM

torres...i'll check out the interview...but thanks for posting that in advance.....
janhavi...honey...you need to practice visualisation in your life...it really does work wonders...there is NO PLACE for negativity...and its all well and good to 'hope'...but I'd rather 'make'...it's a much more positive mindset to be in and I think that this will help you when you feel down/negative/unsure/confused........go read a book by Norman Vincent Peale.....'The power of the positive mind'.....it will work wonders and will get you to start believing in what you may perceive as 'the impossible'.....

sky....my pleasure...i will absolutely try my best......

malteser1 , 6/11/09 1:21 PM

danny , 6/11/09 1:40 PM

janhavi , 6/11/09 2:11 PM

tejas , 6/11/09 2:49 PM

danny...watcha sayin' man? i could never worship anyone as much as i worship you danny boy....xx

malteser1 , 6/11/09 3:29 PM

:D

janhavi , 6/11/09 3:31 PM

So, janhavi, I completely understand your reservations about the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. I worry Roger will lose, too. But, looking at it objectively... WHO, precisely, is going to take out Roger Federer in a Best-of-5 match on GRASS? To my knowledge, in the last 5 years, only Rafael Nadal at the very top of his game was BARELY able to do it when Federer was smack in the middle of a huge slump.

I don't know, but I have faith that Federer's grass court game is at LEAST as untouchable as it was last year.

malteser1:

relax..thanks buddy..bookies maybe will make money and you too..i hope they are taking bets..and no no i am not fed-up..its for the love of the game..watch great tennis..btw are you a everyone else trasher? and sorry not interested in copy-pasting..go get your stories yourself..and are these articles not good enough..or you think maybe their quality is not good? maybe then why are people on this site anyway? :D

tejas , 6/11/09 5:26 PM

tejas...i absolutely don't understand what you are saying? am not a betting woman....so hopefully that answers your first point.....re: you calling janhavi nuts and a retard? why? she is contributing to the thread.....so not sure what you mean here? finally.....when you say...'are these articles not good enough?' what do you mean? we all post articles to each other to help all of us understand the game more and its always good to see what other journalists report...don't you think? at least i learn a lot from the threads/articles other people post here.......
i REALLY don't know where you are coming from? As long as you do...that's what counts...right? Have a great day....
C'MON!
Allez Federer!

Arvis...have just read the article...it's fab! Thank you! Re: an earlier post of yours Arvis....why do you worry? fed has said he feels the 'pressure is off'...it might be a media savvy ploy? who knows...but actually...i don't know about you...but i feel as i think torres mentioned earlier....anything now is a bonus.....and wimby is next on the horizon...so why not?!
