    6/9/09 10:41 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga advances, Verdasco upset in Halle Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nicolas Kiefer reach the second round in Halle, Germany on Monday. Fernando Verdasco, meanwhile, is bounced by Philipp Petzschner.

    (4) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Fabrice Santoro 7-5, 6-2

Tsonga kicked off his grass court-campaign in dominant fashion, needing just one hour and nine minutes to defeat Santoro in straight sets at the Gerry Weber Open on Tuesday. In his final season on tour, Santoro stayed competitive with his heavily-favored countryman throughout the first set despite being clearly overmatched. "The Magician" won only five points in six return games, but he managed to stay on serve en route to 5-5. Tsonga, however, converted his sixth break chance of the afternoon late in the opening frame of play and never looked back. The No. 4 seed won all but three points in his last four service games (none on his first serve) and added to more breaks in the second to ease pas Santoro. Tsonga, who fired eight aces and won 31 of 33 first-serve points, will face Tommy Haas in round two.

    Philipp Petzschner d. (3) Fernando Verdasco 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4

Verdasco, who blew out Petzschner in the second round of the French Open, seemed to be in control on Tuesday, but the underdog German stormed back to win in three. After dropping the first set by getting broken a single time, Petzschner exchanged two breaks apiece with Verdasco during the second frame of play. The world No. 58 forced a decisive third by taking the tiebreaker seven points to five. Verdasco continued to be hopeless on serve in the final set, getting broken twice more and winning only 40 percent of his second-serve points. Petzschner surrendered serve just once in set three, and he finished off the upset with a clutch service hold at 5-4.

    Nicolas Kiefer d. Viktor Troicki 6-2, 6-1

With the German crowd behind him, Kiefer obliterated Troicki on Tuesday night. Kiefer needed just one hour and 15 minutes to book his place in the Halle second round, where he will face No. 7 seed Jurgen Melzer. Troicki held serve only once in his four service games of the first set, and nothing improved for him in the second.Kiefer capitalized on both of his break-point opportunities in set two and never faced a break point of his own. Six double-faults against a mere two aces doomed Troicki's efforts.

The tournament also witness a double-bagel on Tuesday. Fernando Vicente did not win a single game against fellow qualifier Olivier Rochus. Next up for Rochus is Petzschner.
