Andreas Seppi, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Xavier Malisse made the second round at the AEGON Championships on Monday.
Andreas Seppi def. Robby Ginepri
American Robby Ginepri gave Italy’s Andreas Seppi a real fight for the better part of 2 sets. Ginepri snagged the first set out from under Seppi in the waning moments of the set with a single break of serve. Seppi and Ginepri traded breaks in the second set to force a tiebreak. The Italian was able to hold on to level the match at a set a piece. Seppi won the third set decisively to set up a second round encounter with top seed Andy Murray.
Paul-Henri Mathieu def. Andrei Pavel
No. 11 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu had a more difficult time than expected with Romania’s Andrei Pavel. The Romanian spends much of his time playing doubles or on the Challenger circuit, but he stuck with Mathieu for most of the match. The Frenchman won the first set up a single break, though he served quite poorly (50% first serves). Pavel stuck with Mathieu through the second set. There were no breaks of serve and Mathieu just barely scraped the second set for the win. Mathieu awaits the winner of Sebastien Grosjean and Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Xavier Malisse def. Pablo Andujar
The award for easiest match of the day definitely goes to Xavier Malisse. The Belgian qualifier surged out to a 5-0 lead on Spain’s Pablo Andujar when the Spaniard retired from the match. Malisse will battle the No. 7 seed Marat Safin in the second round.
