Andy Roddick is through to the third round of the AEGON Championships following his straight sets win over Kristof Vliegen on Tuesday.
Andy Roddick made a strong start to his bid for a fifth title at Queen’s Club early Tuesday, needing just 56 minutes to dismiss Kristof Vliegen. The American defeated the Belgian 6-1, 6-4 to his place in the third round. Roddick, seeded second at the tournament, has successfully reached the third round of competition at Queen’s Club for the seventh consecutive year.
The World No. 6, who extends his record to 31-7 this season, turned in a terrific serving day, striking 11 aces in the second-round battle. Roddick held nine of 9 service games, never facing a break point in the match. The 26-year-old, always comfortable on the grass, secured three of 3 break point opportunities on the day. The American closed the second set with a perfect 17 of 17 his first-service points won.
Roddick took home the championship at Queen’s Club in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. He awaits the winner of the second-round match between veteran Australian Lleyton Hewitt- also a four-time title winner at Queen’s Club- and Frederico Gil of Portugal.
Should the two former World No. 1 players collide in the third round, the pair would clash for the 11th time on the ATP World Tour. Roddick is 4-6 lifetime against Hewitt, winning their only meeting on grass. The two met at Queen’s Club in 2006, the American notching a 7-6, 6-3 victory in the semifinals.
