Mikhail Youzhny and Marcos Baghdatis each made a strong start in their opening round matches at the AEGON Championships Monday afternoon. Twelfth seed Jeremy Chardy bowed out to Sam Querrey in straight sets.

Sam Querrey won his first match at Queen’s Club after defeating 12th-seeded Jeremy Chardy 7-6, 6-4 in the opening round on Monday. The unseeded American went unbroken in the match, holding eleven of 11 service games. The Frenchman faltered during the business end of the first set, donating a double fault to lose 12-10 in the tie-break. After saving three break points at 1-2 in the second set, Querrey held serve comfortably for the remainder of the match. The American secured the only service break in the contest to lead 5-4, closing out the match in one hour and 23 minutes of play. The 21-year-old finished the day with 13 aces and 93% of his first-service points won.
Querrey will take to the court against South African Kevin Anderson in the second round. Anderson took out Fabio Fognini of Italy in round one, 6-3, 7-6.
(14) Mikhail Youzhny def. Oscar Hernandez 6-4, 6-2
Fourteeth seed Mikhail Youzhny had little trouble in his first-round match, knocking out Oscar Hernandez 6-4, 6-2 late Monday afternoon. The 26-year-old pocketed a break of serve early in the opening set to lead 2-1. A steady Russian solidified the service break, holding serve comfortably to finish the set 6-4 in 33 minutes. The Russian, who captured 89% of his first-service points on the day, did not face a break point during the match. Youzhny continued to play well in the second set, pocketing a break of the Hernandez serve at 1-1 and 4-2 to cap off the match in a little over one hour.
Youzhny faces wildcard entrant Marcos Baghdatis in round two. The Cypriot defeated Britain’s James Ward 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round.

Former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis eased into the second round after dismissing wildcard James Ward 6-2, 6-3 on Monday. The Cypriot, looking to bounce back from injury during most of the 2008 season, led 4-2 in the opening set. Baghdatis quickly collected three set points at 5-2, taking the first set on a backhand error from Ward. The 23-year-old had no trouble on serve, holding nine of 9 games without facing a break point. Baghdatis showed consistency from the back of the court, building a 4-1 advantage in the second set. The Cypriot struck ace No. 6 on match point, booking a place in the second round after 55 minutes.
Baghdatis meets 14th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny in the second round. The Russian dispatched Spaniard Oscar Hernandez in the first round, 6-4, 6-2.
