Tomas Berdych kicks off the Gerry Weber Open with a straight-set win over Jan Hernych on Monday. Berdych moves on to the second round of the event in Halle, Germany.
Tomas Berdych defeated Jan Hernych 6-4, 7-5 on Day 1 of the Gerry Weber Open, which begins the grass-court season along with the AEGON Championships at Queen's Club. Berdych needed one hour and 28 minutes to reach the Halle second round.
Berdych and Hernych exchanged one break of serve each as the opening set progressed to 4-4. The fifth-seeded Czech then held to force his lower-ranked countryman to serve to stay in it. Hernych double-faulted at 30-30 to give Berdych a set point, but he saved it for deuce. He could not, however, save a second set point as Berdych seized a one-set advantage.
Berdych fired six aces and won far more of his first-serve points than Hernych (83 percent to 62 percent), but Hernych managed to trade breaks en route to 5-5. Just as he did in the first set, Berdych came up with a critical service hold to put the pressure on his opponent at 6-5. Serving to stay in the match, Hernych crumbled and Berdych finished off the proceedings with his third break of the afternoon.
Hernych finished with twice as many double-faults as aces (four to two), while Berdych blasted 10 aces to just two double-faults. Next up for Berdych is either Mischa Zverev or Joseph Sirianni.
