History as well as pride and perhaps fate are on the line as Roger Federer faces Robin Söderling for the French Open title. But the Swiss is not counting on anything less than a heated battle when he faces the Swedish surprise.
"There are no easy Grand Slam finals", said Federer, one victory away from his place as the sixth man to win all four Grand Slam championships in his career. "The one on the other side of the net has also won six matches and is definitely in the shape of his life".
Andre Agassi was the last to complete a career Grand Slam 10 years ago at Roland Garros. Other players who have done it are: Fred Perry in 1935, Don Budge in 1938, Rod Laver (1962 and '69) and Roy Emerson (1964).
Söderling, playing in his first career top-level final on clay, has never been past the third round at a major until his Roland Garros breakthrough. "I cannot obviously underestimate Robin, even though I've beaten him I think in the nine matches we've played against each other".
"Obviously it's nice to see someone else for a change in the French Open finals", said Federer, defeated in the last three finals by the missing Rafael Nadal, Söderling's fourth-rounfd victim.
"But I don't know if it's (being in the final) an advantage or not, because I've never been able to win. The pressure is big for both players", not only for me, but also for him.
"It's his first big step in a Grand Slam. I'm sure we're going to play some good tennis".
Söderling knows what he is up against - even if he's yet to experience it. "I've lost a lot of times to Federer. He's a great player and it's very difficult to play against him. I'm expecting the toughest match I can possibly have on Sunday".
Federer says the pressure is intense for both men, experienced or not.

Wow... I vomitted after the match of utter tension... I cant imagine how Fed could keep calm under so much pressure... This Slam feels like it's the first Slam Fed won....
Fed can lose the 1st round in Wimby for all I care but he has proven to me that he is the greatest player of the modern era at least. It's up to Nadal, Murray and Djoker to follow his footsteps.

What a night... it's come to a full circle. Roger need not worry anymore. He already is the best player in the modern era before the match and that doesnt change after the match. He totally DESERVE this.
He can drop to no.4 whateva at the end of the year. WHo cares. If I were given a choice of Fed winning RG or WImby this year I will definitely choose RG.

I was amused! Roger Federer is nothing less than perfection, perfect service, incredible drop shot!(really awesome), superb lobbing, in short words, PERFECT TENNIS! JUST PERFECT!

torres...i thought about you alot through the match..when you said you were gonna watch it the WHOLE way thru'! Buddy...it may not have been as great as the semi final...but i think it was about time that roger gave us an 'easier' time...don't you?! the only stupid thing tho' was the prat that ran onto the court in a matador suit....my end on british eurosport....commentator said it was a rafafan...but how disgraceful he was...they did a few slow mos of roger's face when it had happened and he looked really shaken...i was so shocked that that could happen....villas...was in the studio and said in 43 years of his visiting RG..he had NEVER seen anything like this happen ever before....
in fact because it had gone quiet with the rafafans for a short while...i thought the joker in the suit was either raindrops or posmatrac!
Anyhow...thank god it was nothing too serious (tho' serious enough as could have easily put fed off his game...and i believe it did for a short while as he misfired a few shots after that)....but boy...if that stupid prat had got a knife or something....my god...not worth thinking about....

Ah, there you are tomnjerry! So glad you're a part of this! Torres, Malty, Zoey, Sky, Ariel, Fedexfan, and all other Fed fans, we can say it, "We are the Champions, My Friends, and we'll keep on fighting 'til the end....We are the Champions! We are the Champions" I think all Fed fans played a part in Fed's win. He felt the love from everywhere, and this lifts you up - just lifts you up.

morning fedex...i know EXACTLY what you mean...i couldn't sleep last night...still basking in the glory of the win for our man.....
it truly was a special...special moment last night....i watched the match again and it was EVERY bit as good......i looked at the match more closely this time and roger played some A-M-A-Z-I-N-G rallies with soderling and vice versa....he didn't actually use as many drop shots as i thought he would....but some of the backhand shots were sublime....i am sooo...sooooo happy for him...WHAT A RESULT!
one of his fastest serves was 209 kmh which is EXCELLENT for federer...the biggest serve for soderling was 221 kmh...(del potro the day before was 222 kmh)...so fed is even improving on the serve! Is there nothing this man cannot do!
Also his movement around the court, he was so fast....like a cheetah....a glider...a slider....a master......
wimby...at least another 3 times fedexfan...don't you worry about that! starting with 2009...why not believe? believing gets you EVERYWHERE! It's FABULOUS....am so happy this morning...i feel like i am gliding on air....whooshing around the place on a magic surf of L-U-R-V-E for the fed.....
