French fans are stopping traffic to show their support for Roger Federer as the neighboring Swiss aims to lift his career-first title at the French Open.
With the eliminations of four-time winner Rafael Nadal, No. 3 Andy Murray and fourth seed Novak Djokovic, it is looking more and more like the best chance here for the 13-time Grand Slam titleholder.
Even when he beat Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals, support in the stands was even split. It's even more fervent out in the city.
"I've felt it for few years now", said the three-time losing finalist to Nadal. "But this year it's even more extreme. When I walk on the streets or drive in the transportation or I go for dinner, everybody is like, 'This is your year. You've got to do it'".
"They're screaming from their scooters. They even get out of their cars at the red lights and want me to sign an autograph or take a picture. It's quite incredible this last couple of weeks".
The Swiss said that excitement for the event is pulsating in the capital. "It just shows me that everybody is watching the French Open here, it's great to get the support. We don't have a Grand Slam in Switzerland, but I definitely feel at home in the Grand Slams, and especially here".
Even Monfils has thrown his support behind the man who knocked him out: "I hope that this time you win the tournament", he said at the net.
Federer says his unbeaten record against Del Potro does not mean a thing.

sour grapes? sour grapes is the one who cried in Melbourne you fool. It's not just Nadal fans who don't like him and it's because he's a freakin arrogant, self-loving tosser who takes swipes at players who get the better of him. THAT is sour grapes and sore loser. But what would you know? There is a reason you admire him!
homos , 6/5/09 11:28 AM
homos is a clear example of a rotten sour grape. Do Nadal a favor and bring up the image of Nadal fans.
torres9 , 6/5/09 11:36 AM
yeah I'll be rushing to do you that favour!!!
homos , 6/5/09 12:01 PM

You know what, homos? There has to be something wrong with Nadal fans like yourself. I don't think he is as arrogant or big mouth like so many of you paint him. If he was, he would not have the support he has from so many people from all over the world... least of all his own peers on the tennis court. When he speaks, it is usually the truth and straight to the point. I guess it may project himself as somewhat arrogant to some people but I would rather it this way than him cloaking the meaning with abstract words.
As for crying, who wouldn't if you have fought hard and came close but couldn't get across the finish line. It's what makes us human. It doesn't make him arrogant just because he couldn't hold it back in public. Do you know Nadal cried after losing to Federer at Wimbledon 2007? He cried in private but he still cried.
cable , 6/5/09 12:14 PM
amazing!! forget the discussion with anti Feds who don't like a single positive comment about him !! Fed is really popular among ppl and
players.. former players as well!!
cable:
just go to Fed-Delpotro thread and read Henman's comment about Fed's crying,he supports u on it...it's on 6/5/09 8:57 AM ...
niloofar , 6/5/09 1:50 PM
no cable it's you who's blind. you either love arrogance or admire those who are conceited and egoistic. either way, you're the one with the porblem.
there's nothing wrong with fed crying ove a loss, but to steal the moment from the first ever spaniard to win in australia leaves a bad taste. and you're the one who started this shit fiight when your FIRST post criticised nadal fans when no nadal fans had posted anything let alone anything -ve about fed. so take the blame for bringing this thread down you blind idiot.

The french think of Switzerland as part of their back yard. Fed as much a "local boy" as the other french player. Plus he has more fans than anyone thanks to his curriculum.
There's a saying in France: "Africa begins at the Pyrynees", meaning they think of Spain as part of Africa, and being the racist pricks that they are, of course think of Africa as a land of dark-skinned savages.
Caveat: Not all French think that way of course... The educated ones are more open (although the above phrase has been attributed to Alexandre Dumas, famous Novel writer).
A survey in Europe on racism and xenophobia showed that France had the highest percentage of people who admitted having negative feelings towards blacks and arabs (40%).
Spain scored the lowest, with 13% (and no, it wasn't a Spanish survey).
Sorry to all the french people who are not like that, but you are surrounded by more predjudiced compatriots than anyone else.
Rafa's 4 RR must be a very painful reminder to all those people of the fact that their race is not as superior as they think.
Of course, that doesn't reflect badly on Roger, necessarily. I still hope he wins, specially now that we know he gets to play Soderling.
grafight , 6/5/09 8:35 PM
This just in. Fed is in the final!!
grafight , 6/5/09 8:45 PM
Kick butt checks! The Fed is not a player, is a name that they've got to beat! I hope Delpo and Le Sod are not too scared when they hear in the court "Ladies and Gentlemen, Roger Federer!". xD
Excess of confidence is not good, but what the hell! i'm really excited with all these things happening in this French Open '09. Fed, you've got all our support, so just go for it, with confidence but being careful all the time.

I want to make peace with anti-Federer Nadal fans. I wasn't trying to put anything negative about Nadal fans, just merely citing the angry posts that have been put up by obviously disappointed Nadal fans who thinks this tournament is a sham because their beloved one has fallen short.
I'm sorry that you all can't accept his loss graciously the way he has. I think Nadal is much more of a gentleman than a lot of his fans seem to be and he would be disappointed to know how some of his fans has reacted.
I'm not getting upset over all this. It's your problem. If you can't lay to rest the result, which is already history, then you are carrying a lot of baggage filled with anger and hatred. Life is too short to keep carrying heavy baggage. Chill out guys and girls. There is always a next time... and hopefully he can make a good showing on his Wimbledon defence. I wish him best of luck without any ill feelings.

cable....you don't have to apologise for any of your comments....especially to homos...the guy is as sour as a ton of gooseberries...so don't even give him a second thought....he always brings up the AO when fed was crying....it just makes me wanna scream! the enormity of that occasion must have been immense...what homos fails to include...cable....is the fact that within 40 seconds of him being upset...he turned the situation around and said...'this isn't fair...i'll try again' and congratulated rafa....said he deserved to win...and that he had played a phenomenal game'...that's the point cable......the point being that homos is very selective in what happened to federer.....equally.....rafa TOTALLY UNDERSTOOD how roger felt....and let's face it...when faced with an emotional situation (like all of us have been at some point in our lives...)...do WE know how WE are going to react? NO....not until the situation is presented to us PLUS we don't have millions of people watching us......that was the enormity of the situation for federer.
So what you have said cable...in my view...has been reasoned and without malice....you are just dealing with someone who is unreasoned and very malicious...so let it go and just be yourself....

Hey, I suppose we all have our darlings in life. Hate figures too, to judge by the reactions of the RG crowd at times - not to mention a few threaders who really should get out for a bit of fresh air and exercise. Or perhaps they are not inspired by the ones they profess to adore?
Right now I guess I'm feeling as bad as all those Fed fans have been feeling for over a year now. But that's a champion for you - the ability to come back and win again, even when playing below their best. Sadly Rafa did not always find a way to win when he was playing below his usual level these past few weeks. But now we learn it was his knees all along, a bit like RF's mono last year. Still, credit to Söderling who stared him down and never once let up - wonder who he learned that from!
Rafa will be back. He is a true champion. It's been an awful few weeks for his adoring fans, but This Isn't Over. Fed may have played more matches than Rafa these past five years at RG, but I'll bet nobody in the locker room is looking past the temporarily-indisposed King of Clay to come back next year and start putting all that to rights.
But this is not to knock the others. Sport needs rivalries. The women's game, for one, has never been the same since a Graf fan stabbed Seles sixteen years ago. These days a women's match sounds like a four-legged farmyard - you have to use the Mute button and lose interest quickly after that.
I loved Agassi but tore my hair out for years as he struggled to get the challenge together against Sampras. Even Martina took her time to get going against Chrissie! And even though Rafa has missed more than his share of Grand Slam hard-court finals against Roger - six in all since he became No. 2 in July 2005 - he's still just 23 and now rules on that surface, too! And with new blood courtesy of Murray and Del Potro, these are exciting times for true fans.

Amazing... even though he has won so much, the public (except sour grapes Nadal fans) and players themselves are rooting for him. Even though I would love to see him lift the trophy, I hope Delpo and Gonzo/Soderling gives him a good run for his money, not just surrender it to him.
