Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin Del Potro are set for a blockbuster fourth-round encounter at the French Open. They defeat Christophe Rochus and Igor Andreev, respectively, on Saturday afternoon.
(9) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-2, 6-2
After outlasting Juan Monaco in arguably the most high-quality match of the entire tournament, Tsonga was once again in devastating form at the French Open on Saturday afternoon. Tsonga needed a mere one hour and 24 minutes to put a straight-set beatdown on an overmatched Rochus. The No. 9 seed broke serve in the opening game of the proceedings and never looked back, adding another break later in the set to take it in 29 minutes.
More of the same continued throughout sets two and three; in Tsonga's case, the exact same. He struck 13 winners against eight unforced errors (identical numbers to his first set) and used two more breaks to keep up his domination. To the delight of the French fans, their man was even more impressive in the third. Tsonga blasted an additional 17 winners and finished a routine day at the office with 43 winners to just nine off the racket of the 5'7'' Belgian. Next up for Tsonga is a scintillating fourth-round matchup with No. 5 seed Juan Martin Del Potro.
(5) Juan Martin Del Potro d. (25) Igor Andreev 6-4, 7-5, 6-4
Del Potro improved his head-to-head record over Andreev to a perfect 5-0 with a straight-set victory in the Roland Garros third round. In fact, Del Potro has now won 12 straight sets against the Russian. Not one of the three on Saturday, however, was particular easy. Del Potro earned just one more point than Andreev in the first set (29 to 28), but converted on one of two break points. That was enough to take a one-set lead, as the 20-year-old Argentine did not face a single break point throughout his first five service games. Both men capitalized on their lone break chances in the second as the set progressed to 5-5. That's when Del Potro struck for another crucial break, and he promptly served it out for a commanding two-set advantage.
Andreev, however, was not about to go away quietly. Despite dropping serve twice and only getting one back, the No. 25 seed showed signs of battling back with his opponent serving for the match at 5-4. Andreev saved a host of match points (five total), some with spectacular forehands, and two thanks to Del Potro double-faults. But the world No. 5 finally finished off the proceedings after two hours and 22 minutes with a huge serve and backhand combination. Del Potro leads the head-to-head series with Tsonga 2-0; both wins came on hard courts.

Is that the technical name for the net device Ricky?
How about a Tsonga /Nadal final ?

I could deal with that smr--lol

I like Tsonga, but he is NOT going to beat my FED!!! LOL Good Luck against DEL Potro Tsonga...

Ricky: No predictions?? Come'on ..tell us who's gonna win in this match!
On another note: Now that Nole's out, I don't think anything can stop Fed. For parts of today's match, Roger played like Federer of the old. When Federer's on song, there's no one that can stop him. Except for one man. He wears a pink shirt btw :)
This draw could shape up to be a gimme for Federer: With a personal whipping boy Andy roddick in the QF, and previously double bagelled DelPotro in the Semifinal.

imjimmy, Roddick still has to get past Monfils ... but if he does I think he should show up for his match against Roger wearing a hot pink shirt !
smr , 5/30/09 11:32 PM
smr: That's why I used the word "could" . Of course Fed might end up facing Monfils in the QF and Tsonga in the SF. That could be harder. I was just saying that if it goes according to seeding and Roddick, Del Potro meet Fed in the QF and SF respectively, it'll be much easier for him. Either way, I think he should be a lock for the final.

Hi sky, if you are still here...who do you pick Tsonga or Delpo?
zoey234 , 5/31/09 3:26 AM
Nevermind sky. see you tomorrow. Ricky is "Leaning" toward Tsonga in 5 sets.
zoey234 , 5/31/09 4:30 AM
I'll make my prediction in the match preview. As Zoey said, I really have no idea right now except that it will be amazing. And yes I am leaning toward Tsonga at the moment.

The last game of Delpo-Andreev was ridiuclous. Delpo blew two of his first five match points with shanked double-faults that wren't even close. Andreev saved one with an absolutely shocking forehand down-the-line pass.
Del Potro then though he had won it with an ace out wide. He started walking to the net. Andreev was already almost at the net to shake hands. Neither knew that a let had been called by the thingy on the net. Del Potro then examined the device and either broke it or it was already broken. So Cedrick Mourier had to go fix it.
Finally DP finished it off with a huge serve and down the line backhand.
