  • Nadal lends his support to drug-tested Gasquet

    5/30/09 6:50 PM | Johan Lindahl
Nadal lends his support to drug-tested Gasquet Under-fire Frenchman Richard Gasquet can count on the weight of world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in his corner as tennis officials probe a positive drugs test for cocaine from the Miami Masters this spring.

Nadal came out in strong support of his colleague: "I support him, I'm certain that he's not taking anything. He's not taking cocaine. I know him, he's a good friend of mine, and I discussed this with him last week."

Nadal fears that even casual contact with a drug user could have easily accounted for the positive test of the number 21. "He's most certainly not taking cocaine," said Nadal. "You know what the world is like today. When you go to a party, anything can happen these days. If you kiss a girl who's taken cocaine, anything can happen, and that's the truth.

"That's reality, and this can destroy your life or your career - it is most unfair."

Nadal said he took it upon himself to get in touch with Gasquet to express solidarity. "I wanted to tell him again that I support him fully, he's got my total support.

"Sometimes these measures go too far and they're most unfair."

Awww, Rafa.

But I don't think kissing a girl who's taken cocaine would account for 1.46 of the stuff being in Gasquet's bloodstream.

If it was a party trick, I would hate to think what he must be going through. It would be so so so unjust!

What a true friend Rafa is. Though the "kissing" part made me smile. Did he really say that? Maybe something was lost in the translation again. :-)

I know nothing about drugs, I wouldn't recognise one if it hit me in the face, so I maybe kissing can put traces of drugs into your bloodstream, who knows. Good on Rafa to stand by his friend, not like some others who sit on the fence.

If Rafa thinks that kissing can transmit cocaine, then he must be ultra careful what he does and where he socialises.
