  • Roddick, Haas and Monfils advance to the third round

    5/29/09 3:02 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick, Haas and Monfils advance to the third round Crowd favorite Gael Monfils, American Andy Roddick and Tommy Haas of Germany each prevailed in an action-packed Thursday at Roland Garros.

Andy Roddick def. Ivo Minar 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(2)

With Thursday’s win over the Czech Republic’s Ivo Minar, Andy Roddick has matched his best-ever Roland Garros result. The last time Roddick advanced to the third round in Paris, the year was 2001 and he was competing there or the first time. Since then, the American has bowed out of the French Open in the first round 4 times, the second round twice – and he did not participate at all in 2008. Roddick made short work of the big-serving Ivo Minar in their second round match. The match took less than 2 hours to complete, and Roddick hit 38 winners to just 16 unforced errors. Minar was not able to break Roddick once in the straight set rout.

Roddick says his win over Minar was very pleasing.

Roddick says his next opponent Marc Gicquel of France will be a test.

Roddick not ready to read too much into place in third round.

Gael Monfils def. Victor Crivoi 6-4, 6-3, 6-3

No. 11 seed Gael Monfils is just back from a knee injury, and there was some question about whether he would be fit enough to compete at the French Open. Fortunately for the Frenchman, he seems to be healthy. Thursday’s second round match against Victor Crivoi was a largely one-sided affair. To the delight of the Parisian crowd, Monfils was not broken once in the match as he rolled to a straight set victory.

    Tommy Haas def. Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-6(2), 3-6, 4-6, 6-3

Tommy Haas had a fight on his hands with the man who dispatched James Blake in the first round. Leonardo Mayer battled back from 2 sets down to force a fifth set. The Argentine is ranked No. 93 in the world, but his level of play in this match and his first round upset of Blake suggests bigger things. The German’s experience won out in the end as he pocketed the fifth set with a single break of serve. Haas is reported to have had trouble with shoulder pain during the latter stages of the match, so that will be a concern as the tournament progresses.
