  • Verdasco cruises in straight sets, Ferrer pushed to five

    5/28/09 12:05 AM | Kelli DeMario
Verdasco cruises in straight sets, Ferrer pushed to five Spaniards Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer move safely through to the third round of the French Open after posting victories on Wednesday.

    Fernando Verdasco (8) def. Philipp Petzschner 6-1, 6-2, 6-3

Eigth-seeded Fernando Verdasco made quick work of unseeded Philipp Petzschner in the second round Wednesday afternoon. The Spaniard dropped serve just once during the match, holding on to defeat the German in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3. Verdasco turned in a strong performance throughout the day, securing seven of 9 break point opportunities in the 75-minute contest. The 25-year-old posted solid numbers on serve, winning 80% of his first-service points and 90% percent of his second. Verdasco kept his unforced errors in check as well, gifting only 8 of them in three sets of play.

The Spaniard moves on to meet compatriot and 31st seed Nicolas Almagro in the third round. Almago rallied from a set deficit to dismiss Latvian Ernests Gulbis in four sets on Wednesday, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.

    David Ferrer (14) def. Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2

David Ferrer came through a marathon five-setter with veteran Nicolas Kiefer on Wednesday. The 14th seed battled for four hours and 5 minutes- including a 69-minute third set- before knocking out the tricky German, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. The 27-year-old, broken three times during the match, captured five of 19 break point opportunities. Ferrer kept a positive winners-to-errors differential on the day, hitting 50 winners to just 27 unforced errors. An erratic Kiefer, unable to take advantage of any momentum he built during the match, donated 10 double faults and 71 unforced errors.

Ferrer sets up a third-round clash with Swede Robin Soderling. The 23rd seed took out Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan Wednesday afternoon, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.

Verdasco looks in stunning form. It will be a brilliant match if Almagro of last year shows up
