  • Tipsarevic, Lopez and Youzhny advance on Monday

    5/26/09 2:29 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tipsarevic, Lopez and Youzhny advance on Monday Janko Tipsarevic joins Feliciano Lopez and Mikhail Youzhny in the second round of the French Open.

    Janko Tipsarevic def. Albert Montanes 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-4

Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic upset Spanish clay courter Albert Montanes in a hard-fought 4 set match Tipsarevic, currently ranked 64 in the world, has been struggling on clay in 2009. The Serb lost in the second round in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome and Belgrade. Monday’s win over an accomplished clay-courter is a good result for the Serb. Montanes got the upper hand in the first set, but Tipsarevic came back strong in the second set. The Serb played two superior tiebreaks to finally gain the upper-hand. Montanes was broken a single time in the fourth set to give Tipsarevic the victory.

    Feliciano Lopez def. Franco Ferreiro 6-7(3), 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-2

Brazilian Franco Ferreiro very nearly beat Feliciano Lopez of Spain in straight sets. Ferreiro was blasting away from the baseline through the first two sets and well into the third. Lopez was largely at the Brazilian’s mercy, and only the fact that Ferreiro began to tighten up as the finish line came into view saved Lopez from being sent back to Spain unceremoniously. The Spaniard played the better tiebreak to win his first set of the match. Once he had secured the third, Lopez put pressure on Ferreiro and finally in the fifth set, the Brazilian caved a bit. Lopez will face Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.

Mikhail Youzhny def. Gilles Muller 7-6(2), 6-1, 6-4

Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny posted a comfortable straight set victory over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller. Youzhny has been struggling in 2009. He had a semifinal result in Kitzbuhel, where he lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. No. 79 ranked Muller was able to keep pace with Youzhny for the first set. There were no service breaks; the opening set was decided in a tiebreaker. The Russian was able to secure the lead with a well-played breaker. From that moment on, Youzhny held firm control in the match. The Russian will have a showdown in the second set with Romania’s Victor Hanescu.
