Novak Djokovic has to play little more than one set as first-round opponent Nicolas Lapentti retires with an ankle injury at the French Open on Tuesday afternoon.
Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday when Nicolas Lapentti retired with an ankle injury. Djokovic led 6-3, 3-1 when Lapentti had to call it quits.
Down a break midway through the first set, Lapentti turned his left ankle as he approached the net and prepared to hit a volley. The 32-year-old Ecuadorian immediately called a trainer and had the ankle taped heavily. He came back out and ended up holding serve one more time before losing the opening frame of play by a single break.
With third-round points to defend from a successful trip to last year's French Open, Lapentti tried to continue in the second. No more tape, however, could be applied to the ankle and the underdog quickly fell behind by another break. After sending a backhand long during a service game at 1-3, Lapentti finally had to retire.
Djokovic, of course, was in complete control throughout the brief proceedings. The fourth-ranked Serb fired 18 winners against 19 errors and never faced a break point. He awaits either Brian Dabul or Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round.
Djokovic says that points were short in his opening match so he not tired.

AJDE Nole! A Potentially dangerous 2nd round against the only guy EVER to beat the world #1 on RG, Brian Dabul! *lol
imjimmy , 5/27/09 12:01 AM
1)Dabul never beat Nadal on RG, you shmuck, get your facts straight.
2)Djokovic will face Stakhovsky, who beat Dabul in 4 sets.
Think before you write,geez!
Artaban , 5/27/09 12:35 AM
Well, he Dabul (someone I had never heard of ) , did beat Rafa on RG turf but the real FO had not started yet. Relax, how I read imjimmy, he's making a joke, Arteban.
Nole is looking tough.
zoey234 , 5/27/09 1:40 AM
Brian Dabul beat Rafa in an exhibition set 7-5 on Saturday.
ONE SET! Not a match!
Nam1 , 5/27/09 1:44 AM
Take it easy people. It was meant to be a joke. Dabul did beat Rafa in the 1 set exho match, but that does not really count as Rafa himself said that he was not serious.
Aratban..did you read the *lol after my post?? Lighten up people :)
imjimmy , 5/27/09 1:58 AM
Dabul lost to Stakhovsky, anyway
RickyDimon , 5/27/09 3:45 AM
does it mean Stakhovsky will take 2 sets from Rafa :)
posmatrac , 5/27/09 4:01 AM
imjimmy, that was a good joke :) I liked it.
jean , 5/27/09 4:42 AM
Jean: Thanks. I knew Dabul had lost and also that the exho was a joke. That's why I used "potentially dangerous" and added a"" lol"". Apparently humor is lost on some people here.
BTW I did encounter the headline on website: Rafael Nadal loses to World #109 (Dabul). And the fine print mentioned that it was just a 1 set exhibition match. I thought it was pretty funny. Dabul as the new king of clay :)
imjimmy , 5/27/09 8:05 AM
noooo, ppl, u are wrong... chuck norris is the only person who beat nadal on RG clay, 4:0 in straight sets! :D
marzipan , 5/27/09 8:31 AM
imjimmy,so you knew about Dabul's lost, but decided to continue anyway in your aberrations.Spreading lies isn't fun or funny,so do not exaggerate next time.By comparison, the one made by marzipan has a lot more humour in it then your impishness "joke".
Artaban , 5/27/09 9:15 AM
imjimmy, so you were on an untold mission to fool those of us with a sense of humour! Shame on you :)
jean , 5/27/09 9:43 AM
Ha ha imjimmy (and jean): I love the joke too! Good one!!! New King of Clay Dabul is the first man to halt the winning streak of World no. 1 Rafael Nadal on the clay of Roland Garros! Ha ha ha ha....
Artaban, you have a problem. Please take it somewhere else.
remi , 5/27/09 9:49 AM
Yeah,I have a problem when it comes to intentional disinformation. At first I thought that he wasn't fully informed and I corrected him,but the fact that he knew about all of these things, just adds fuel to the fire.Somewhere else? No, I'm gonna stay right here as long as I'm right.Oh,and Remy, the next time you open your mouth with an oppinion make sure you motivate it.
Artaban , 5/27/09 10:30 AM
Oh my god you are right. It's a conspiracy!!!!!!!!!!! How could I have misssed it!!!! You are sooooo clever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
remi , 5/27/09 10:47 AM
A joke is now International disinformation????
Time for your medication ***LOL***
jean , 5/27/09 11:01 AM
lol,"international"?Did you misread that and now you need help to read or is it that you're pissed and now resort to attacks?Keep talking all day clowns, but I'll say this:Better telling the truth, than telling a malicious joke.
Artaban , 5/27/09 11:22 AM
No I didn't misread but I did mis spell. Not everone can be perfect like you I make mistakes unlike you.
It's not a malicious joke. He didn't try to hide it. LOL is obvious that it's a joke. If it was intentional he wouldn't have put "lol". From your misreading of it and your command of the language, English is obviously not your mother tongue. Why is mazipan's joke which is not the truth, not a malicious joke? Because it's so ridiculous that you COULD recognise it as a joke?? You obviously know you were wrong but are too arrogant and proud to admit it. Pathetic.
jean , 5/27/09 11:43 AM
AJDE Nole! A Potentially dangerous 2nd round against the only guy EVER to beat the world #1 on RG, Brian Dabul! *lol (imjimmy , 5/27/09 12:01 AM)
-Come on...It's quite obvious that it's a joke unless you initially misread it which is understandable.
Nole plays Stakhovsky next. He should beat the Ukranian fairly convincingly.
homos , 5/27/09 11:55 AM
You can stop crying now Jean,I'll tone it down a bit. It's just a matter of choice which joke is funnier and which one is bitter.I expressed my thoughts, like or hate them,it makes no diference to me.And now that YOU have got your malicious thoughts out your system, wish you a happy day.(Hmm...hope you don't consider this to be spiteful as well).
Artaban , 5/27/09 12:34 PM
EVeryone's thoughts and jokes are malicious except your own.
Grow up you pathetic donkey!
jean , 5/27/09 12:42 PM
lol,is that your best shot?Look how much you deviated from the topic. My last post was a truce offer, but if that's how you wanna play it,fine, keep speaking hatred, dork.
Artaban , 5/27/09 1:47 PM
Jean and homos: thanks so much! Really appreciate you guys trying.
Artaban: Let's bury the hatchet. It's just a game, and we're all here to enjoy tennis. Have a nice day and let Rafa, Djokovic ( or whoever your favorite is) do very well in RG.
Sorry If my post offended you. Certainly wasn't my intention- just a harmless attempt to humor :) Ricky/moderators please remove my post at 12:01 AM, since Artaban does not like it.
