Andy Roddick def. Romain Jouan 6-2, 6-4, 6-2

Andy Roddick of the United States clipped French wildcard entrant Romain Jouan in straight sets in first round play on Monday. The win puts Roddick into the second round at Roland Garros for just the fourth time in his career. The American came into the match off an excellent quarterfinal run in Madrid just 2 weeks ago. Roddick was completely dominant on serve. Jouan did not earn a single break point in the straight-set drubbing. The match was just over an hour and a half long. Roddick will take on the big-serving Czech Ivo Minar in the second round.

    Paul-Henri Mathieu def. Laurent Recouderc 6-4, 6-4, 6-1

French hope Paul-Henri Mathieu defeated countryman Laurent Recouderc in straight sets. Mathieu broke Recouderc 6 times in the match and he had a total of 12 break point chances. Conversely, Recouderc had just one chance to break Mathieu, which he converted. Neither man served particularly well. Mathieu’s first serve percentage was a meek 54%, Recouderc’s dipped to a shocking 38% for the match. Mathieu, who nabbed the No. 32 seed , will play Pablo Andujar, who took out Robby Ginepri on Monday.

Pablo Andujar def. Robby Ginepri 6-4, 7-6(7), 7-6(3)

American Robby Ginepri’s clay court woes continued on Monday, as he suffered another defeat on the dirt. Ginepri’s only other clay court tournament in 2009 was at the World Team Championship last week in Dusseldorf. The American lost all three of his round-robin matches there, which puts his clay-court total at 0-4 for the year. Andujar had a fight on his hands. He required more than three hours to dispatch Ginepri. In the end, Andujar sealed the win with his superior play in the tiebreakers.
