Roger Federer got off to an impressive start in his 2009 bid to unseat Rafael Nadal from the French Open.
World No. 2 Roger Federer was crisp and impressive in his first round victory over veteran Alberto Martin on Monday in Paris. Alberto Martin fell victim to Federer’s return of serve throughout the 1 hour and 45 minute match. Federer played crisply, if not perfectly. The Swiss struck 38 winners to 29 unforced errors and broke Martin 5 times to secure the straight set victory.
Martin managed to keep the score relatively close in the first set. The Spaniard was able to break Federer once, but he was broken back twice to give Federer a comfortable one set lead. From that point, the Swiss man was in complete control. He allowed Martin no other break chances, and to add insult to injury, Federer threw in 10 aces to cap off the victory.
Federer is attempting to complete a career Slam, something only 5 other men have accomplished. He has lost in four consecutive years to world No. 1 Rafael Nadal, and three times in the final. If Federer prevails in Paris this year, he will equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slams. Awaiting Federer in the second round is a clay-courter from Argentina, Jose Acasuso.
Federer had no complaints about a straightforward win.

Can we have a three-way final? Nole vs Rafa vs Fed?? :)
remi , 5/26/09 4:21 AM
Did you get to see the match Sky? I didn't . My attempt to record the march while away resulted in an ESPN 2 coverage of the spelling bee final, which was riveting in its own way. LOL But not what I was hoping for.
Remi, would Nole and Fed be on the same side of net? No, not a chance unless we add Muzz and make it doubles....

Wouldn't that be an awesome idea for a charity thing?? Rafa, Roger, Nole and Andy playing doubles? Do it in a 3 out of 5 match format (instead of 3 out of 5 sets) so it is spread out over a couple of days at least. Pick the partners by drawing names randomly. I think that would be cool and people would pay to see that! (Sorry, my brain seems to be in overdrive--lol)

FFT, it is bedtime my friend. You had some energy hunting down all those facts and figures ( on the other thread) and energy leftover to draw up plans for charities. What? How many matches? 5 in 3 days? I was joking about them playing doubles. Do you really think there is a chance multimillionaire superstars would take time out to play for charity? I wish it true. And with that thought, I say goodnight and GO Bernie TOMIC!!!!!!!!!

Actually, many of the top players have active charities they raise money for. It's just not written about alot. But a doubles match between those 4 over a span of 2-3 days would definitely be worth watching or going to! No pressure involved so maybe we'd see alot of horsing around and joking around.
