Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro are on a collision course for the French Open quarterfinals after being dealt relatively favorable draws in Paris.
Novak Djokovic could not have asked for much more when the French Open draw was revealed on Friday afternoon. Not only is he opposite Rafael Nadal, but he is also part of a relatively weak quarter.
Aside from Djokovic and Madrid semifinalist Juan Martin Del Potro, unseeded players in this section could pose more of a threat than the seeds. Two blockbuster all-unseeded affairs in the first round feature Marcos Baghdatis against Juan Monaco and Juan Carlos Ferrer against Ivan Ljubicic. Djokovic could meet either Ferrero or Ljubicic in the third round, while Monaco and Baghdatis are in the other half of the quarter and would not face Del Potro until the fourth round.
The other seeded entrants in this section are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tommy Robredo, Dmitry Tursunov, Mardy Fish, Igor Andreev, and Philipp Kohlschreiber. Tsonga, Tursunov, Andreev, and Kohlschreiber have all been dealing with recent injuries. Robredo struggled in the clay-court Masters Series events and Fish has always preferred faster surfaces.
No such question marks surround Djokovic and Del Potro. The fourth-ranked Serb finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in two of the clay-court Masters tournaments and held three match points against Nadal in the Madrid semifinals. Del Potro upset Andy Murray in the Madrid quarters before falling to Roger Federer.
Barring a monumental upset by--most likely--either Monaco or Ljubicic, Djokovic and Del Potro should find themselves going head-to-head in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
